Costco shoppers haven't been shy about expressing their anger over the warehouse's new membership card policy. The new rule, which was implemented in some stores in January and is now rolling out nationwide, calls for mandatory membership card scans to enter the store.
As frustrating as the new policy has been for some shoppers, it turns out that Costco workers hate the mandatory card scanning, too. Or at least, they hate they way it's making some shoppers behave.
A Costco worker recently vented on Reddit about the membership card-scanning policy. They also offered disturbing details on the "abuse and mistreatment" workers have faced from irate customers who now have to scan their cards.
According to the Redditor, some employees tasked with scanning cards have been "reduced to tears" due to shoppers' abusive behavior.
"A bunch of you are mad. Now, imagine being the low level employee at the door that is instructed to enforce those policies. Imagine the abuse that YOU, the public, has subjected them to. Calling them slurs. Getting in their faces. Swearing at them. Threatening them. Assaulting them. Spitting on them. Complaining to them," they wrote online.

Most were similar with my insurance. Costco beat them without insurance. But when I checked, the insurance wasn’t actually paying for anything: it was just providing contracted prices for me along with restrictions on formulary, refill size and trying to push me to mail order.

I guess Costco’s reason for the scan is over target. Cheap kucks using other peoples cards.
And, maybe it's a way to keep vagrants from coming in for free samples. (I'm for that, too.)
We have a society of entitled brats. They join a store and refuse to follow policy. If they refuse or are nasty, ban them from Costco for life worldwide or at least USA wide.
Yes they can and do
Sam’s Club used to rescan random items at the door
Similar system to what Walmart once had
Customers expect decent customer service from a warehouse store?!
Don’t blame the employees, customers.
You want better customer service, put your money where your mouths are and stop shopping there.
If you refuse to do that, then suck it up and stand in line courteously.
I stood in line at a small biz with excellent customer service for almost half an hour today because of computer issues. Had a lovely conversation with employees and fellow customers whose schedules permitted us to wait while employees sorted things out.
I try not to use big box stores.
When I do, I’m not going to expect the level of excellent customer service I get from my favorite small biz.
"Signs, signs, everywhere a sign..."
Isn’t requiring ID somehow racist?
The mark of the beast presents itself.
I believe it’s because you used to just be able to show your card as you walked in the door, which never caused a back up. Now it has to be scanned by an employee and that is creating a back up to get into the store, which is what customers are angry about.
Every time the local radio station plays the original (the best version) they cut out the instrumental at the beginning
Which is my favorite part of the song
Meijer and Walgreens consistently beat Costco on most drugs.
“The problem is that Costco is often out of the things we shop for. She has four dogs and her favorite dogfood is no longer there. Anyone seen Alaskan Salmon Burgers lately?”
A frequent problem with knowing whether or not they’re out of (or have stopped carrying) an item is the constant moving of merchandise around the store - often seemingly at random. You might find the Alaskan Salmon Burgers have been moved to some logical spot, like by the men’s socks. /s
F them. One reason Costco is able to keep prices down is that they check people going in and they check them going out. It’s a hassle for customers but they are mostly stupid liberals who don’t admit that they benefit from the capitalism of Costco. I am happy to show my card and have them check my purchases on the way out.
There are certain items that I only buy at Costco. Butter eggs lettuce blueberries salmon meat coffee laundry detergent. Some produce items and gasoline whenever possible. Jeans. Don’t buy the sushi platter it’s disgusting.

I just had to do this scan last week, There were two scanners, left side of the entry and right. I barely had to stop walking to accomplish it.
I do know in California it is law that you don’t have to have a Club membership to buy Booze. That could slow down things a bit although a tiny minority of the foot traffic is doing that.
Exactly. They should treat it like pass privileges at the airlines - if you or your guest on a buddy pass misbehaves, you lose the privilege.
Employee theft is the biggest theft, they check the receipts because employees “check people out” and don’t always ring everything up, that is why Kroger has implemented the same policy.
THOSE LADIES cost at least $15 an hour-— maybe more + payroll taxes, etc.
Per order... but often my order is not $50...close to it but not there.
THE LOSSES from self checkout are MASSIVE.
