A team of health and nutrition specialists has found that people on a ketogenic diet may experience an increase in LDL cholesterol levels, higher apolipoprotein B levels and reductions in certain gut bacteria.
In their study, volunteers went on a ketogenic diet for a month so the researchers could study its impact on their bodies.
A ketogenic diet consists of a drastic reduction in consumption of carbohydrates, replacing them with fats.
In this new effort, the research team suspected that the diet may also lead to increases in LDL cholesterol levels and possibly other problems. To find out if that might be the case, they conducted a randomized controlled trial by recruiting volunteers to go on the diet for a month and then to undergo a medical evaluation to determine changes.
The trial involved 53 non-obese adults. A third of them went on a ketogenic diet, another third went on a low-sugar diet and the remaining third ate what the researchers describe as a moderate diet to serve as a control.
After one month, all the volunteers were tested. The research team found that those volunteers on the ketogenic diet had lost on average 1.6 kg of fat. They also had 16% higher levels of LDL cholesterol in their blood than the control group and 26% higher levels of apolipoprotein B, a protein known to clog arteries. Those on the low-sugar diet lost on average of 1 kg of fat and had 10% lower levels of LDL cholesterol in their blood samples and no change in apolipoprotein B levels.
The researchers noted that those volunteers who had been on the ketogenic diet also had reduced levels of a type of gut bacteria known to be involved in promoting a strong immune system and also in the production of vitamin B.

I would suggest this was from a loss of soluble fiber and an increase in fat.
The LDL and Apo B levels went even higher for me, so I made adjustments to bring in a lot more fiber from low carb breads (Hero Bread and Sola Bread/Bagels), along with psyllium. I have also tweaked other supplements and foods, including having a lot more mushrooms and more low-carb veggies.
Everything moderation.
The same thing happened to me. I’ve been on a keto diet for about 4 years. My LDL went up like crazy this year and I just started on statins. Maybe I’ll try what you did and see if it affects anything. Although, if the statins bring my LDL down, it will be hard to know if my diet is affecting anything.
I’ve been doing keto and fasting for five years. Initially my ldl went up, but that’s to be expected while losing weight. I started putting olive oil in my coffee to increase my fat intake and my ldl dropped like a stone.
Truth be told, most researchers idea of a keto diet is usually bass backwards so I don’t really take their research seriously.
What exactly is the difference between their keto diet and the low sugar diet since keto is also low sugar?
I also noted that I was getting off of the appropriate ratio of copper to zinc. I had enough of both, on paper, but my daily copper was around 4 mg, which drives out zinc, unless I have 30 mg of zinc a day. The ideal ratio is 1 mg copper to 7.5 mg of zinc, from all daily sources. I had been chronically low in zinc, and that, too, will cause blood pressure and cholesterol issues. I have corrected that, now.
I had no such effect last time I did Keto, in fact most of my markers improved. I have been doing it now for the last few weeks (sucks during summer months when all the good fruits are available but I did that to myself). I do take 3 grams of sugar free psyllium husk tablets (half in the am and half at pm).
But each person will respond differently. For me, everything you can measure improved. But I stayed on my statin and BP meds both times.
One month is too short a time, imo, to make a conclusion. The body is still adjusting to the changes.
What if you just took a tablespoon of olive oil, daily. Would that have the same effect as the coffee olive oil?
Ummm...
You should open your mind to non-orthodox thinking on vascular health which deviates significantly from the ‘lipid hypothesis.’
The fact is that said thinking defines radical changes in blood cholesterol as a response to inflammation.
Translated: Your keto ‘diet’ is making you sick, and then in response to an orthodox blood test and diagnosis, you take a pharmacological substance with known toxic side effects to reduce your body’s response (a combination the public has been gaslighted for >50 years to believe is ‘healthy’).
I ask you: If there’s even half a chance that I’m right, how do you defend putting 2 rounds in the gun (on top of whatever prodded you to even consider a fad like ‘keto’) and - better question - what do you expect might happen next?
I urge you to find a good Naturopath and abandon orthodox AMA medicine if you wish to regain your health, because your so-called ‘doctor’ is killing you.
Free advice (and quite possibly the last time I may offer any here).
The Keto diet seems terribly unbalanced.
I’ve been doing keto for years along with low carb. My last liver panels were up so I had an ultrasound. I have a non-alcoholic fatty liver AND gall stones. Stocked up on lots of fruits and veggies now. So confusing.
Carnivore is the best way to eat now. The Lion’s Diet is a a Carnivore diet that will get you the fastest results. Check out Dr Ken Berry on you tube. Also Kelly Hogan. It will lower your blood pressure. Cure most diabetes, cures almost all diseases. I’m 72 years, started carnivore 2 years, lost 60 pounds and take no prescriptions.
Probably, I put it in my coffee, because that’s easier for me than just chugging it down... which I’ve tried. 🤢

Question: Can I just order a pizza with everything to balance things out?
Google the “Shangri-la Diet”. It’s about taking olive oil before meals.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Shangri-La_Diet
“...The consumption of flavorless calories supposedly lowers the set point, and therefore lowers weight.”
I’ve been on the carnivore diet the last six years, not strict, as I cheat now and then.
I had half a Dominos pizza last night, finished the rest of it today.
I noticed brain fog sets in after about twenty minutes, while I’m still eating.
This is FUD. Keto reduces overall inflammation in the body, especially in the cardiovascular system. Reduced inflammation has been linked to reduced incidence of atherosclerosis, as there are fewer “bottlenecks” where LDL can pile up. LDL is just one measure, and it’s often cited as something to fear. LDL alongside low HDL and high triglycerides is a symptomatic marker of poor diet.
Cholesterol in general is a terrible marker for overall health, and I truly believe this will play out more and more in the coming years as more studies are done on the long-term efficacy of Keto and Paleo-like diets.
“I’ve been doing keto for years along with low carb.”
I thought keto and low-carb were the same thing...?
For example, if, as a person who has been on a low carb diet for a very long time, I "moderate" my diet by adding a few small sandwiches each week, the sugar in the bread will cause my weight to shoot up (initially water gain), cause my blood pressure to rise, and even cause my bad cholesterol numbers to climb.
As my doctor put it, a little bit of sugar to a person on a keto diet is like a little bit of alcohol to an alcoholic (sugar is that addictive).
Keto is extremely low carb. Low sugar is just low sugar.
