FReeper RedRyder_90 had an idea for a book club style thread on FR after we listened to several of the David Suchet Bible readings. I think it's a great idea. If no one else is interested, she and I will share our comments.
I understand that threads discussion religion, or in this case, the version of the Bible read (NIV), can become wild west style bar brawls.
So I would preface my comments by suggesting that the thread be a religion thread in which brawls have to be taken outside it.
I see James Earl Jones reads the KJV - perhaps that could be another companion thread, or perhaps....*looks around as if inviting doom* those reading selections from either version might share a thread. *looks around for those preparing to throw a barstool*
Seriously, I have zero interest in arguing over....anything regarding this book-club Bible reading. My focus is spiritual. Perhaps a separate thread from the Bible book club thread, wherein chairs can be thrown could be made? Those who wish to debate translations etc. could focus on that thread. We could post an image of Roman Gladiators to help readers know if they're on the right thread?
Those who don't want to listen could read along in their own Bible and comment, if so inclined.
Personally, I was very impressed with the first in the series of actor David Suchet's Bible readings (The Holy Book of St. John on RUMBLE) because he portrayed the emotions of those in the Bible to such an extent I felt as if I were there among the crowd hearing the apostles.
I think the rest in Suchet's series are audio only. He reads the entire Bible.
There are various sources for those interested in David Suchet's readings.
Bible Gateway: I discovered that Bible Gateway has many spoken translations, including David Suchet's. I don't know at a glance how to select the passage. I did start with Genesis and was pleased it automatically continued to the next chapter without my intervention.
https://www.Biblegateway.com/audio/suchet/nivuk/Gen.1
Rumble: I see some of Suchet's Bible readings on Rumble but I haven't found a tidy collection of them - they are spread out, hosted by various RUMBLE channels. But perhaps we could find the links needed for the whole collection on Rumble?
Audible: I came across a nice article about the David Suchet readings on the following website.
https://theimaginativeconservative.org/2022/05/listening-Bible-david-suchet-michael-de-sapio.html
Writer Michael de Sapio writes:
Mr. Suchet’s complete recording of the Bible is available as an audio download; you can also obtain separately such parts of the Bible as the New Testament, the Poetry Books, or the Epistles. Mr. Suchet reads the New International Version, a translation which he admits will not please everyone. (At least it’s better than a 1970s paraphrase Bible I once owned. “Judge not lest ye be judged” was rendered as “Go easy on others.”)
I don't know what it's like to use Audible so this is not a recommendation. It's an option for those who either know what they are doing, or are in fact, willing to venture into the unknown.
For those who already have an Audible Account (via Amazon), David Suchet's entire Bible reading collection is available to members for '1 credit' or about $18. Clicking de Sapio's link shows that Audible is running a promotion to the end of the month (August 2024) wherein a person without an audible account could, if they so choose, pay $1 per month for each of the first 3 months of membership, cancel anytime, and then buy Suchet's collected Bible readings with '1 credit'. I don't recommend what I have not used; proceed at your own risk (or sense of adventure).YOUTUBE: The most common, free source of David Suchet's Bible readings is Youtube. However it pays to know what YOUTUBE's security risks are these days - YOUTUBE is owned by Google and at present, just clicking on a YOUTUBE link launches spyware onto your machine that can't be removed other than by re-installing your operating system. I guess we should expect this from Google in an election year? When you click on a YOUTUBE link, the spyware grabs passwords from all tabs open in your browser.A Freeper posted about the issue and I am thinking I should go through that thread and make a 'users guide' style set of instructions in a stand alone thread which explain how to prevent this maurading raid on your privacy. If you've already been infected then those instructions won't help unless you also re-install your operating system.Google is virtually everywhere, and websites like gmail, which it also owns, seem to have the same problem. Google did this before a few years ago (anyone know if it was an election year?) and was shamed out of it. It's probably had every password I've ever had for years. But, the Google 'problem' is back as of the date of the FReeper's thread.
Google is at it again, new YouTube security threat 08/04/2024 12:35:56 PM PDT · by Openurmind · 98 replies8/4/24 | MemberI can make a thread of instructions on how to clear the cache and then use the command line to clear temp files as the thread geeks describe. (SHOUT OUT TO THREAD GEEKS. WE LUV YUZE GUYS). I dare not even attempt the task of a 'user friendly' re-installation of operating system software (I'm NOT WORTHY!).So you can work with Google, but that source is not going to be for everyone.
If anyone has any insights, or interest in participating, please contribute. I've never done this before so anyone who has ever lead this kind of shared reading/listening experience online - please speak up, possibly even volunteer (oops...I just said the quiet part out loud!!!)
It might be nice if there's a separate KJV reading thread moving at the same reading pace as an NIV thread - we could tour both as we complete selections. Just sayin' I seek a flame-free experience.
Here's a list of people who may still be considering participating in this thread's Book Club version wherein we watch David Suchet videos, or read the assigned book ourselves if we prefer. Let me know if you'd like on or off the list. :D

Each reading assignment will be one book? I know some books are long so I'll be looking for direction on pacing. Maybe long books will form a few separate reading assignments (chapters?) with primary discussion once the book is completed?
I think it's a good idea that not every day has an assignment like the Navigator PDF suggested (I think they suggested 25 reading assignments per month)- we may need some days in case people need more time for life and don't want to fall behind.
As to timing - we could plan to meet on a date/time and those who can't make it can catch up and comment later. I would think since most FReepers are in California, it would be a Pacific Standard time. Does anyone have suggestions? Some are not early birds, some are not late birds, some work. A little help please?
I like the suggestion of a monthly thread with a reading plan.
The following italicized suggestion sounds good, and I'll be cross referencing it after reading the links below to distill ideas on managing rotating leaders. I basically have to learn from others how to do this so rotating leaders would allow me to learn from many without me bogging everyone down over and over.
Maybe rotate leaders for each book, who will lead by laying out a reading/listening plan and with each part such as instruction, body section and summary with discussion questions. Maybe a new leader chosen by simple vote, after the freeper offers to do so. The first leader and book...vote on how to begin that too maybe.
I also think a caucus thread with boundaries is a good idea. Would love for our time to be uplifting and without strife.
I'm noting the interest in listening to JEJ read portions:
Formally casting my vote to hear JEJ read the KJV when we get to the 23rd Psalm!
I like David Suchet for Old Testament reading and maybe JEJ for the New Testament?
Here is the link in google to James Earl Jones' reading videos posted in YOUTUBE. I note that JEJ's collected readings are available through Audible and is also on CD.
Google's Search Results for James Earl Jones Bible recordings on YOUTUBE and on CD
I plan to pick through these links for a few tips. In particular - I'm intrigued to find what summary/discussion questions might be available at the second link.

Why does the NIV (Genesis 1:1) use “vault” instead of “firmament”?
Where is this? I don't see his name in the drop-down menu.

I’m interested!
The simpler the better I think.
The Sunday School lessons by Bruce Gore are definitely keepers.

Bruce Gore is also on YouTube.
I would love to join in with the group. My suggestion...... since I am overwhelmed with rl right now, perhaps a link to the book we are discussing at the top of the thread? That way I can click and listen, instead of having to find it wherever it lives.
On the east coast but could probably do a west coast time. Think the weekend or a weekday evening would be best for me.
Don’t feel qualified to lead!
Could all those receiving this query let me know, 'yay or 'nay' whether you would be willing to take a turn hosting one of our Bible book threads? Taking the time to 'nay' will help me create a solid list of 'yay's. Thank you in advance.
Also - if you saw jocon307's helpful suggestion, could you state whether West coast evenings, before the East goes to bed, would work?

Please add any suggestions to tighten our time frame around when we are to meet. Again, thank you in advance.
Grammy, Thank you for the helpful suggestion, I'll add it to the collection.

Just got James Earl Jones reading the King James Bible on Audible!
Interestingly the note says that this new version has removed the background music of the prior edition in order that one may better “hear and appreciate the Scripture.” So that was a pretty good note to see!
One thing about the David Suchet NIV, the Chaptering done by Audible doesn’t really comport with the Chapter Breaks in the Bible itself. One of the reviewers at Audible posted a kind of cheat sheet for it, later I’ll log in from my phone, think I’d be able to post the link that way. It was very helpful to me while I listened to it.

I think that must be what is at the bottom of the link in the OP. I was skimming and didn't 'get' what he meant at the time.

Put me on the list!
I’m traveling today so will have to get back to you later when I can read this and respond to it.
Nay
Would this be more of a Bible study?
Yay, I’m in but........
Having a “moderator” for each session will be difficult. Trying to coordinate that might be a bigger mess. (can’t make it, forgot, internet down, dog ate my homework.....)
These are my thoughts.... perhaps a format of this type. This is just my example.
Doing something like this will give you the flexibility to alter the pace.

No. If you have no comments, then no comments are made. I am just insecure about how to do this as I don’t recall participating in a book club before. I guess I’d like to avoid complete radio silence as we move book to book, and would like to know the nature of comments that others might find of interest or useful. But if no one comments, that’s fine too.
