Explanation: What's that on the horizon? When circling the Earth on the International Space Station early last month, astronaut Matthew Dominick saw an unusual type of lightning just beyond the Earth's edge: a gigantic jet. The powerful jet appears on the left of the featured image in red and blue. Giant jet lightning has only been known about for the past 23 years. The atmospheric jets are associated with thunderstorms and extend upwards towards Earth's ionosphere. The lower part of the frame shows the Earth at night, with Earth's thin atmosphere tinted green from airglow. City lights are visible, sometimes resolved, but usually creating diffuse white glows in intervening clouds. The top of the frame reveals distant stars in the dark night sky. The nature of gigantic jets and their possible association with other types of Transient Luminous Events (TLEs) such as blue jets and red sprites remains an active topic of research.

Neat-o. I thought they were called “sprites”.
I see a Carl’s Jr and a Wendy’s. What are the other two?
That’ll never do!
We need a highly maneuverable giant jet that can take down space aliens. We probably need a bigger space station too.
I have heard them called both Sprites and Jets.
Not all cheeseburgers are made in galaxial chains young astronomer. Some are made in the backyard grills of celestial home solar systems. Those could be Smith's or Jaworski's. The Webb Infrared Telescope will need to collect more data to determine the recipe. One thing is certain from the Olympia Restaurant theory and that is that they all look like cheeseburgers.
Yes some are blue or red NASA had some footage of them may still have them on line.
This is my favorite such picture. It illustrates the majesty of pure communism.
Space .......reminds me of another Harris flop, along with
<><>billions for electric school buses that never got built,

<><>billions to connect rural areas to the i-net-—zilch
<><>and her high tech “AI” flop.

“I am honored to lead to our National Space Council,” Harris says. The National Space Council, a space policy group resurrected by the Trump administration, will continue in a new form under the Biden White House with Vice President Kamala Harris at the helm.
Harris intends “to put her own personal stamp” on the council to focus on a wide variety of space policies, including the sustainable development of commercial spaceflight, “advancing peaceful norms and responsible behaviors in space,” climate change and more, senior administration officials said in a call with reporters Saturday (May 1).
“As I’ve said before: In America, when we shoot for the moon, we plant our flag on it,” Harris said on Twitter Saturday after the call. “I am honored to lead to our National Space Council.”
Never heard of them called jets. I know them as sprites.
I am honored to lead to our National Space Council.... Unburdened by what has been....
I’ll bet lots of us remember the big rumble between the Sprites and Jets on the Upper West Side back in ‘57. It was epic!
Red upward firing “manifestations” are called sprites. The blue colored “manifestations” are called jets.
Star Trek: TNG Episode “The Game”
I saw the documentary on that back in the late 80s. 😎
That one bright spot is Rocket Man’s palace, right?
I'm sure the two trapped on the ISS are totally in agreement.
