I've walked 8,000 steps every day for a year using an under desk treadmill—and it's one of the best things I've done for my health

could easily get close to 10,000 steps a day when I lived in New York City, but after moving to Raleigh, NC, where I work from home and rely on a car, my steps plummeted. Some days I barely cracked 1,000 strides.

I was still strength training a few times a week, but I wasn’t happy being sedentary for so much of my working day.

I decided to try using a walking pad (an under desk, folding treadmill) so I could consistently hit my step goal. Over the past year, I've taken my average step count from negligible numbers to over 8,000 steps a day with my C2 WalkingPad.

I can read on my treadmill, when set slow. I don’t think I could do a keyboard as well. Like Irish step dancing, maybe if I am drunk my coordination might work better.

Thanks for posting! I stopped drinking three years ago and I never felt better. We Boomers need to live into our 90s to further piss of the Millennials, who hate us.

The defining factor is your normal stride. With desk depths of 24-30”, 30”-ers would slide under and not stick out much more than a chair when in use. An Amazon search yields 30” x 20-25” wide pads from Lifepro, Egofit, Homefitnesscode, and Funmily; there are probably more brands if you go a few pages. For comparison, the walk pad I have is 47” long and a smidge under 20” wide. I have a walker straddling the front 15”, leaving just over 32” stride space.

Whoever makes the first exercise bike that brews beer: I’m in!

Every exercise bike should produce something. Or, for incentive, use VR to chase hot chicks. “The harder you pedal the harder you get.”

At least hook ‘em up to the grid and reduce everyone’s electric bill a few cents.

“Also got a rowing machine, even less fun”

I rowed on a good rowing machine 45 to 60 mins a day for many years... and I have the lower back to prove it.

I know they can’t be as effective as walking, but it has to help your ankle joints and feet bones. I will have to read, to see how effective they are.
