The Boston Globe has apologized for its headline that called Algerian Imane Khelif a “transgender boxer.”
The heavily criticized headline ran in both the print edition of the paper last week and on its mobile edition with a story written by the Associated Press’ Greg Beacham.
“Transgender boxer advances,” it read.
However, on Saturday the Globe issued a statement in which it apologized for the inaccurate nature of the headline.
“A significant error was made in a headline on a story in Friday’s print sports section about Algerian boxer Imane Khelif incorrectly describing her as transgender. She is not. Additionally, our initial correction of this error neglected to note that she was born female.
“We recognize the magnitude of this mistake and have corrected it in the epaper, the electronic version of the printed Globe. The editing lapse is regretful and unacceptable and we apologize to Khelif, to Associated Press writer Greg Beacham, and to you, our readers,” the statement from the Boston Globe read.
The Associated Press story did not refer to Khelif as transgender and the publication originally titled the article, “Algeria boxer Imane Khelif wins first Olympic fight when opponent Angela Carini quits.”
Beacham himself responded to criticism over the situation in a post on X over the weekend, explaining that he did not write the headline.
“That’s not my headline. That word isn’t in my story,” Beacham said. “My stories are syndicated worldwide, and customers are allowed to write their own headlines.”

Even if she was born a female, her medical condition has pushed her outside the female norm as they test for gender.
Ok so now I’m confused. Does this person have two X chromosome or an x and a Y chromosome?
Person has an X and Y chromosome.
What genitals they have is unclear.
Chromosomal analysis has not been published so it is not clear what gender this person is.
He has xy chromosomes, but was allegedly born with female anatomy
https://medlineplus.gov/genetics/condition/swyer-syndrome/#frequency
He was born XY with a genetic defect that produced female bits. I was also born XY and with nipples, but I don’t use them to nurse babies. He chose to look at his nipples and other parts in a way that’s different from his chromosomal and chemical makeup. It’s nobody’s business up until the point that it unfairly affects others. He could not care less, however.
Thank you for the clarification. So this person is a hermaphrodite?
“ Even if she was born a female, her medical condition has pushed her outside the female norm as they test for gender.”
Exactly.
Elevated testosterone levels make this person function abnormally .
It’s illegal for females to take injections to have the same effect.
Even if he/she has the testosterone level naturally, should not be allowed to compete against women.
His DNA contains XY chromosomes, so genetically he is male. The Sex Determination Region (SDR) on his Y chromosome had a rare genetic mutation that caused it not to function. All humans begin with female genitalia by default and develop into males if they have a normal SDR. All the other male characteristics for body mass, strength, and testosterone levels were unaffected.
The issue is not whether he should be allowed to fight as a woman, the issue is whether this is a fair athletic contest. The betting odds for someone with these advantages would be prohibitive and the fight would never go on. The IOC needs a better set of criteria to ensure that contestants compete with approximate equals regardless of their gender preference.
It is XY with a defective Y. ARD-5 is my understanding.
Born looking cursorily like a girl, but at puberty shows manish traits. No breasts. Infertile. It’s a genetic defect.
Wait ‘till you see what we’re making with puberty blockers!
With both X & Y chromosomes, there is legitimate questions about the role the Y chromosomes had in the persons bodily development, regardless of genetilia and regardless of the gender the person identifies as.
I think we really need special sports competitions, for the gender confused, like we have for the disabled.
Some call this “intersex” it is not it is extremely rare— clinical gender anomaly.
He is not the only man fighting in the womens class. The two tranys are both in a gold metal fight.
the two boxers in question are heavily favored to win betting wise. I wish I had looked when all of this started
this reporter has viewed the genetic report

If two boxers want to contest the report they can simply run their own and publish it.
What struck me is this:
““What we see now is that some want to own the definition of who is a woman, and there I can only invite them to come up with a scientific-based new definition of who is a woman and how can somebody being born, raised, competed and having a passport as a woman cannot be considered a woman?”
Like this idiot has never heard of Caster Semenya and the appeal to the CAS. XY 5-ard. It’s a dude.
“The betting odds for someone with these advantages would be prohibitive and the fight would never go on.”
This really isn’t true. It just has high odds. I have seen people risk many many thousands of dollars on a bet with high odds to make less than a hundred bucks.
Right now one betting site has both boxers at -670. If you think it is a sure thing you parlay it with something else.
I have seen the Chiefs with far worse odds.
We've all seem females that seem sort of masculine, and males that seem sort of feminine.
This athlete is an extreme case.
It may be true that he was “born a girl” with internal testes and ambiguous genitalia.
But those testes produce testosterone. He’s a man.
