Patty Hearst - innocent or guilty?

Posted on 07/27/2024 2:55:48 PM PDT by Krosan

What do you guys think? Was she a willing terrorist or a traumatized teenager with a Stockholm syndrome?

I don't know too much about that case and was leaning toward the first, but today I read a description:

Meanwhile, the SLA was indoctrinating Hearst and raping her repeatedly. Then the SLA offered her a choice: to join them, or be released.

Let me ask you a question: in the shoes of 19-year-old Patty Hearst, how much would you trust the assurances of Donald DeFreeze and the SLA? That’s exactly how much Hearst trusted them when they said they’d let her go. So she said of course she’d join them. Hearst famously robbed a bank with the SLA and went on the run with them. The account I’ve given of her decision is hers, which I believe.

That about covers it.

I just wish that every last terrorist had met Old Sparky. That would have been a fitting end to the story.

She was in on it. Typical white girl attention-seeking behavior.

Of course guilty.
On May 4, 1974, thirteen days before the younger Wolfe's death with DeFreeze and others in a shootout and fire, Headley and freelance writer Donald Freed held a press conference in San Francisco. They presented 400 pages of documentation of their findings, some of which included evidence that, a year before the kidnapping, Patty Hearst had visited DeFreeze in prison.
That was Donald DeFreeze, AKA Cinque Mtume, "General Field Marshal Cinque", of the SLA (Symbionese Liberation Army). He was the guy who robbed the bank with Patty Hearst.   They were bother armed.   Leftists are going to do Leftist things.

many people on this site immediately blame the victim.

Are you referring to the people Hurst was robbed and extorted?

That's a very solid argument toward guilty.

She was a normal girl captured by terrorists. Her survival instinct kicked in. She did what was needed to survive. Unless someone was there with her and went through the pain she suffered, no one can make a worthy comment.

It is a sad, horrible story.

As Walter Sobchak famously said, "the B___h kidnapped herself" and of course the Dude agreed.

Guilty. Patty Hearst was convicted because she participated in an armed robbery with the SLA and was captured on camera doing so. The, when she testified at trial, on cross-examination, the prosecutor forced her to admit that the piece of jewelry she was still wearing had been given her by her SLA lover. Even if converted to the SLA through rape and an abusive captivity, the conversion took and persisted even after she was free.

I hope you never have to experience what she went through., because it might make you see that everything it not as it seems. Trauma can adversely affect someone’s life beyond what you might believe.

> a year before the kidnapping, Patty Hearst had visited DeFreeze in prison <

If that’s true - and is backed up by an actual prison log that can be found online - then Hearst is guilty as hell. And she can go to hell.

But if there’s no log, then it’s just a case of some guy told some other guy. And Hearst is a victim.

Regardless, every terrorist who was involved here should have shaken hands with Old Sparky, as I mentioned earlier.

I would forgive a 19 year old traumatized girl that and wouldn't demand adult behavior, but I am now thinking guilty because of what higgmeister wrote.

She was a rich girl who knew it didn’t matter anyway. She could rely on the old man’s money.

I was a child at that time, but I remember the grownups talking about this case when it happened. They all believed she was guilty.

Sure. Why not.

If you repeatedly beat your child it is not your fault and you are the "real victim" so why would becoming a terrorist be your fault?

Let's not hold anyone accountable for anything.

Everyone is a victim.

Except for her of course.

Screw her.

It is the murderous b*tch we should all be feeling sympathy for.

Excuse my disinclination to join you in your adoration of violent thugs.
