Northrop Grumman’s Cygnus space freighter is pictured moments after release from the
Canadarm2 robotic arm, ending its five-and-a-half month stay at the International Space Station.

At 7:01 a.m. EDT, the S.S. Patricia “Patty” Hilliard Robertson Northrop Grumman Cygnus spacecraft was released from the Canadarm2 robotic arm which earlier detached Cygnus from the Earth-facing port of the International Space Station’s Unity module. At the time of release, the station was flying about 260 miles over the South Atlantic Ocean.
The Cygnus spacecraft successfully departed the space station more than five and a half months after arriving at the microgravity laboratory to deliver about 8,200 pounds of supplies, scientific investigations, commercial products, hardware, and other cargo for NASA.
Up next, the Kentucky Re-entry Probe Experiment-2 (KREPE-2), stowed inside Cygnus, will take measurements to demonstrate a thermal protection system for spacecraft and their contents during re-entry in Earth’s atmosphere, which can be difficult to replicate in ground simulations.
Following a deorbit engine firing on Saturday, July 13, Cygnus will begin a planned destructive re-entry, in which the spacecraft – filled with trash packed by the station crew – will safely burn up in Earth’s atmosphere.
Cygnus arrived at the space station Feb. 1, following a launch on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. It was the company’s 20th commercial resupply services mission to the space station for NASA. The spacecraft is named the S.S. Patricia “Patty” Hilliard Robertson in honor of the former NASA astronaut.
Seem like have a disposable junk barge named after you would be a dubious honor.
>>>Seem like have a disposable junk barge named after you would be a dubious honor.<<<
I had the same reaction. Then as it turned out, history didn’t do any favors, especially because:
“Following a deorbit engine firing on Saturday, July 13, Cygnus will begin a planned destructive re-entry, in which the spacecraft – filled with trash packed by the station crew – will safely burn up in Earth’s atmosphere.”
>>>
Robertson died May 24, 2001, in Houston from burn injuries sustained in the crash of a private plane at Wolfe Air Park, Manvel, Texas, on May 22, 2001; she was 38 years old. Robertson had been providing instruction to a private pilot when control of the aircraft was lost.[6]
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patricia_Robertson
Probable Cause and Findings
The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident to be:
the flight instructor’s failure to maintain control of the airplane during a touch-and-go landing, for an undetermined reason.
>>>
The airplane came to rest 40 feet past the departure end of runway 02, in a near 90-degree nose down attitude, against a tree. The airplane was consumed by fire. Both pilots sustained multiple injuries, including burns to 90% of their bodies. On May 24, 2001, the flight instructor succumbed to her injuries, and subsequently, the private pilot succumbed to his injuries.
Then to add insult to injury, is that a typo on the report? In this day and age, these sorts of details leap right off the page:
Pilot Information
Certificate:
Flight Instructor; Commercial
Age:
38, Male
So the garbage barge named after her will also “destructively” designed— crash and burn as well. Very strange memorial, agree.
Seems the NTSB got her gender wrong, as you observed. The student was male. Don’t know how a trained pilot instructor doesn’t have dual control on a touch and go landing— report says “unknown reason” (medical, mechanical undetermined?). Odd.
Then add in that the current situation aboard the ISS is “touch and go” with Starliner. The general sense is that who’s going to trust it *not* to burn up on reentry.
Strange stuff.
Perhaps the accident report wasn’t a typo, but a statement of biological reality. Sure seems like a glaring mistake, regardless of the times.
Who knows. If that were truly the case, it doesn’t mean anything nefarious. Sometimes people have real genetic anomalies and are forced to ‘identify’ one way or the other.
Annoying that I find myself even contemplating this. Arrg.
In any case, what was NASA thinking with this bizarre memorial choice — a craft destined for a fiery end? Kind of creepy.
Spinning, whirling, still descending
Like a spiral sea, unending!
Sound and fury drowns my heart
Every nerve is torn apart!
A garbage show named after a tranny?
Maybe it’s nothing but dang...
All I wanted to do was a quick look-up for the person whose name is attached to this ‘swan’. Then as it turns out, she died from a fiery air crash. And to taint the simple investigation, a question of ‘gender’ intruded as well.
It’s as if the entire universe is corrupted.
I'd seen that few of these "fiery re-entry" resupply missions were named for astronauts who died in fiery crashes, so maybe it's a gallows humor Running gag?
Still seems tacky, though.
As per the data on the individual pages, the time between a mission's unberthing date and its decay date varies greatly from mission to mission. Just the few I checked (most recent missions) range from 1 day to 25.
All that I have seen for this one's 'swan dive' or 'swan song' is what was put out on Friday:
"Cygnus — filled with trash packed by the station crew — will be commanded to deorbit on Saturday, July 13, setting up a destructive re-entry in which the spacecraft will safely burn up in Earth's atmosphere," they added.Cygnus cargo spacecraft departs the ISS for a fiery re-entry in Earth's atmosphere
Or as currently on its wiki page:
End of mission
Disposal Deorbited
Decay date 13 July 2024 (planned)

Seems like a minor detail to follow up on, but I always appreciate a good metaphor. So far there's not an official word on the decay date for this one's burning up for good with all of the trash inside.
Unberthed on the 12th, commanded to decay on the 13th, and looks like there's a duality in the imagery -- the swan in the white space and the hangman (raven? black swan?) in the black.
To Phinneous,
Of course that would suggest that NG20 is a mission named 'Ang 20, like Esther's requests to hang the 10 sons of Haman and then hang them again, like how those solar arrays are designed, 2 "rosettes", of 10 and 10.

Amazing, isn’t it? All coming together in her time, even two full years...
A year, like the r”t in the phrase in the parsha that week:

RENPET

🌴
Renpet was, in the Egyptian language, the word for “year”.[1]
Its hieroglyph was figuratively depicted in art as a woman wearing a palm shoot (symbolizing time) over her head.[2] She was often referred to as the Mistress of Eternity and also personified fertility, youth and spring. The glyph regularly appears on monuments and documents throughout Egyptian history as the beginning of the phrase recording the regnal year of the pharaoh.

(Maybe she’s even got a time machine... with her name on it. Introduced on a Sabbath, 11 Cheshvan.)

The verse describes when the rest of the events of the Megilla occurred: “After these events did King Ahasuerus promote Haman” (Esther 3:1). The Gemara asks: After what particular events? Rava said: Only after the Holy One, Blessed be He, created a remedy for the blow and set in place the chain of events that would lead to the miraculous salvation was Haman appointed, setting the stage for the decree against the Jews to be issued.
