I'm a Bartender. Customers' New Habits Are Ruining Bars
Newsweak ^ | July 6, 2024 | KC Connolly

This month marks 11 years of working in New York's service industry. It's changed a lot.

As an Irish lad, I grew up on Cheers and in my first gig in New York, I found my solace at Molly Pitcher's Ale House—a popular joint where the regulars could have been characters on that show.

Now, Molly Pitcher's is no more, Cheers is no more, and the characters are no more.

In my first gig, a month in, I had learned that the bar corner seat was Rosie's, an 80-something iconic regular.

When Rosie entered, she imperiously claimed her throne and those already occupying it immediately yielded. No questions asked. I have no doubt that this unwritten rule wouldn't be respected today.

Nostalgia is a seductive liar, as George Ball once said, and hands up, it is customary for thirty-somethings to point out that their heyday was much better (it was). But I can't help but feel, having by now served thousands, that the public house is different, not for the better, and you, the customer, are in fact ruining the sacred space of the bar.

I simply wish to tell you, the patron, on behalf of all New York service industry employees: You. Look. Ridiculous.

Off the back of the pandemic dining protocols, change occurred. Everything has been done or is expected to be done for the patron.

This, coupled with mass phone addiction and its anti-social ramifications, has created a sick baby of over-reliance on the worker and over-convenience for the patron.

But we, the service industry employees, are not an app, a button you press, and shazam, it's done. We're people, treat us as such. The public house is just that: Public.

Got a senior classmate from high school like that. She found me on Facebook and thinks her mission in life is to convert everyone else into Democrats.

Told her to stuff it but she keeps sending vile anti-Trump propaganda. I’d “defriend” her but my other classmates revere her so I just ignore her posts.

But when I need a reminder of how low TSD can go they’re always there.

I’d agree to that! I’ve in fact even commented to that type, ...”if you dont like your job, quit. Why make us all miserable?”... the shocked look on their faces was priceless!!

...and I remember as well all the girls who copied the hair styles to the T!! I used to love commenting to them “How they look just like Jennifer Aniston!” ...sarcasticly...

I notice the same thing. It seems to be happening everywhere in America. Basically, there's only one acceptable choice, that's it.

It may be one thing if you hear this kind of nonsense coming from the mainstream media. But now your neighbor is saying it...

It's almost like you can't stroll down the street in your neighborhood without listening to the latest propaganda from the Democratic Party.

This guy hates his job. He should do something else for a living … maybe politics.

Great place, often some customers bring their pet dogs (not service animals). As Toby Keith would say, My Kind of Bar.

Sounds like the bar & grill I patronize. Dogs just wander around looking for pets, or the occasional accidentally dropped morsel. Great burgers! For same price McDs charges for a Big Mac meal, you can get an actual burger made of real beef, real toppings, fries and a beer. Also, the barmaids and waitresses call us "Honey" and we call them "Sweetheart", and nobody is offended. Not even the patron wives.

What’s ruining bars in Canada... The cost of booze... Beer and drink prices are north of $7 per drink... And sometimes up around $14 for one drink... That’s insane and the bar businesses in Canada are going bust because of it.

Heh
I grew up in a small town
Back in the day, I was in a Big City
Across the street, a couple strolled holding hands. Weird, they both had the latest Sony Walkman’s, listening to their own music, not conversing....

The article was spot but it’s also true for restaurants and pretty much any store. My cell phone sits home or in the car. If it’s in the car it’s for Android Auto navigation and Pandora. I don’t carry it on me.. side arm usually and I don’t need to talk to that.

The dog thing is getting pathetic and pretty disgusting at times. Service dog I get, pets don’t belong in restaurants or bars and emotional support animals belong in an asylum with their narcissistic owners.

I went to NYC when stationed in Newport, RI back in 1969...Went one weekend just for “sh*ts and grins”...

Found a bar across the street from Central Park that had containers of little breads, cheeses, meats, and veggies sitting all along the bar and it was free to eat from them as long as you had a drink in front of you...

Never ever found a bar as cool as this one was....

I don’t relate to this at all. When I visited Boston pubs 30 years ago, they were cramped, tiny, extremely noisy hellholes where a beer cost you an hour’s wages at decent job.

He’s also a writer-director of three films, so he’s already making that career change.

I've been on fishing trips to western Ontario. Our party went to a halfway decent restaurant for that part of Canada. The food was reasonably priced. I took a look at their wine list. A $5 bottle of cheap wine in the US was $35.

Our society does not do community. That is what is killing pubs. In Jolly Olde England, the whole town went to the pub in the evening. Now, it’s just for a quick drink.

In European towns, the tavern patrons could all trace their ancestors back hundreds of years by the headstones in the local cemetery. Now, your neighbors are just as likely to have arrived illegally a week ago.

The breakup of community was by design. The Globalists don't want anyone grouping together and opposing their plans.

She's found her religion, as false as it is.

The patrons are intellectually vacant

Come down to southwest Florida and you will be relieved of that annoyance.
