CNN — In November 1983, the US, Soviet Union and the rest of the world were teetering closer than ever on the edge of nuclear war. A NATO military exercise had spooked the Soviets, who thought the exercise was merely a cover for a real nuclear strike on the USSR, prompting them to ready their own nuclear forces.
Who knew, then, that an ABC movie-of-the-week would play a significant role in potentially preventing nuclear war?
“The Day After,” a two-hour epic following a few weeks in the lives of small-town Midwesterners before and after a nuclear strike, was one of the most controversial and most-watched TV movies when it aired on November 20, 1983.
In its first hour, the people of Lawrence, Kansas, go about their lives as the threat of nuclear war looms. But when the nuke finally comes to Kansas, the devastation is immediate: Acres of crops are singed and poisoned, homes are leveled, a fifth-grade class is vaporized at school.
Characters we come to know in the film’s first half are obliterated in an instant or barely clinging to life as they succumb to radiation poisoning. Even those who survive the attack by the film’s end will soon die, viewers know.

Kinda wussie are ya?
Glad you brought that up! I quit after a few chapters and never picked it back up again. Need to dig that back out.
Agreed
Uh huh
Yes, but the one good thing to come from THE DAY AFTER was the conservative response, RED DAWN.
Back in those days we YAFers had buttons that said, JUST SAY NYET TO SOVIET NUCLEAR BLACKMAIL.
Agree.
More and arguably better Fear Pron

Yep you were right. I was 22 and I thought it more of the usual, tedious, alarmist Leftist drivel.
I remember the movie well. There was a flurry of TV shows and movies early in Reagan’s first term that were basically themed thus: “Reagan’s itching to push the button and blow up the world!!! That’s what will happen if we rebuild the military and show backbone to the Soviets and Chinese.”
Wrong!! We stood up to the Soviets and they collapsed like a house of cards.
I’m going to disagree with everyone here. I thought it was total crap. Total propaganda. The Democrats were pressuring Reagan to freeze America’s nuclear arsenal and to not expand Europe’s nuclear capacity. Yuri Andropov and the KGB launched a full court press in the American media and this fraudulent fearmongering thing was part of it. Walter Mondale made these pro-Soviet talking points and proposals a huge part of his campaign.
The nuclear freeze never happened and Reagan won forty nine states and Gorbachev succeeded Andropov and Chernenko. So the libs went back to attacking Reagan’s judicial appointments and forgot they made this crappy thing that ended with Jason Robards and ashes or snow or whatever all over his head.
Most people never heard of this Bolshevik classic because it didn’t work. So here comes CNN to dredge it up because they love to re-write history. It’s trash.
Pretty close to what happened.
Great replies.
Good job.
I thought it was a made-for-tv movie.
BS article.
It was an anti-nuke propaganda movie pushed by the communists/leftists here to stand down our only deterrant to Russia’s globalist ambitions.
You can even see it in the article about how leftists claim “it changed the course of the Cold War” because it softened Reagan’s heart or some such nonsense.
No. It did not.
The Cold War ended because the US economy was stronger than the Soviets who couldn’t grow their own food because of communist agrarian policies that specified social attitudes over yields. Identical to the shutting down of whole farms and cattle breeding here to “stop global warming”.
The USSR collapsed and it pissed the leftists off to no end and it’s why they’re trying to destroy the US now.
👍👍
AMEN
Funded by Soviet fronts, at least in part. It was DEFINITELY used in propaganda by Soviet funded leftist group, especially the ever-morphing organization that was addressed on Avenue of the Americas in NY - called “International Action” at the time, and has since changed/morphed it’s name and address.
IA used to have all those expensive printed posters and materials sent to ‘grass roots’ groups to tone up their protest parades, among other things. If you see professionally printed posters, you can usually find them in the weeds somewhere.
Consistently anti-Israel, pro-Palestinian - supports others as suits it’s anti-American pro-communist agenda. Code Pink was and still is a creation of theirs.
lol...
MSM making themselves seem important.
Melodramatic hokum as leftist agit prop.
Remember this was during the “nuclear freeze” leftist campaign. Great Peace March etc…
Same communist groups ginning up up blm, occupy, anti-pipeline, etc…stuff today.
You might be thinking of the Climate movie: The Day after Tomorrow. The article is about “The Day After” which was a TV movie.
Interestingly, The Day After Tomorrow was based on a book co-written by Art Bell of Coast to Coast AM fame. It was about the birth of global “Superstorms” and the impact of climate change on the ocean currents.
Yeah…it sucked. Actually, both of them were hyperbolic junk.
