NATIONAL CATFISH DAY

In the United States, National Catfish Day on June 25 each year to celebrate the value of farm-raised catfish. Dive in with us as we explore some interesting facts you may not have known about catfish.

A diverse group of ray-finned fish, catfish are named for their prominent barbels, which resemble cat whiskers. These nocturnal swimmers don't have any scales. Their smooth flesh makes it difficult for anglers to clean. In the United States, the most commonly eaten species of catfish are the channel catfish and blue catfish. They are also a good source of Vitamin D.

In 1986, catfish comprised the third-highest volume of finned fish consumed in the United States.

A favorite dish of many Americans, this fine finned fish can be prepared in many different ways. Traditionally, many catfish lovers coat the fish in cornmeal and fry it. While many people prepare only the filets when cooking fish, when it comes to catfish, others prefer the fish cooked whole. No matter the method, this tender whitefish comes delicately off the bone. Spices complement this freshwater fish, too. However, it is also delicious served with a milder touch. A little lemon and butter go a long way. Those who love it fried will eat the crispy tail right away to savor the crunch!

NATIONAL CATFISH DAY HISTORY

In 1987, President Ronald Reagan designated June 25th as National Catfish Day by Presidential Proclamation after Congress called for the day to be established by Joint Resolution 178.

Sonia Sotomayer - 1954

On August 8, 2009, Sotomayer became the first Hispanic justice on the United States Supreme Court.

Dikembe Mutombo - 1966

That is what I thought:

Catfishing refers to the creation of a fictitious online persona, or fake identity (typically on social networking platforms), with the intent of deception, usually to mislead a victim into an online romantic relationship or to commit financial fraud.

Perpetrators, usually referred to as catfish, generally use fake photos and lie about their personal lives to present themselves as more attractive for financial gain, personal satisfaction, evasion of legal consequences, or to troll.

Cat Fish House - all you can eat fried catfish Tuesdays and Thursdays in Hobe Sound, Florida. (Sadly, closed in 2023 - all good things come to an end).

Baked Lemon Butter Flounder / 4 servings
For lemon lovers. Can use any mild white fleshed fish. Pairs well with steamed broccoli.

Ing--4 tbl melted unsalted butter, 3 tbl fresh lemon juice Zested lemon (about 1 tbl) 1 tbl fresh minced garlic ¼ teaspoon dried dill 5-4 oz flounder fillets Ks/p 1 small lemon, thinly sliced

Steps--Spray large baker or rimmed sheetpan. Rinse fillets; pat dry. Place in baker; ks/p. Drizzle w/ combined melted butter, lemon juice/zest, garlic and dill. Top with lemon slices. Bake 425 deg 10-11 min, then broil on high 3-4 min. Done when it flakes easily w/ fork. Sprinkle w/ fresh chopped parsley.

My paternal great grandfather died from barb stick infection gained while spooning for them in a Kentucky river. Happened in late 1890’s...imagine medical care in those days.
