A new trial reveals that sildenafil, commonly known as Viagra, enhances blood flow to the brain and improves the function of brain blood vessels in patients at a heightened risk of vascular dementia.
This study marks a potentially pivotal step in the fight against this debilitating condition.
Dr. Alastair Webb said, "This is the first trial to show that sildenafil gets into the blood vessels in the brain in people with this condition, improving blood flow and how responsive these blood vessels are.
The significance of this research lies in its potential to transform the treatment and prevention of vascular dementia, which currently lacks specific therapies.
Chronic damage to the small blood vessels in the brain is not only the leading cause of vascular dementia but also contributes to 30% of strokes and 80% of brain bleeds. High blood pressure, reduced blood flow to the brain, and impaired blood vessel function exacerbate these conditions, making the findings of this trial particularly crucial.
The OxHARP trial was a meticulously designed double-blind, placebo-controlled study involving 75 participants who had experienced a minor stroke and showed signs of mild to moderate small vessel disease. Each participant received sildenafil, a placebo, and cilostazol (a similar drug) over three-week periods in a randomized order. The study employed cardiovascular physiology tests, ultrasound, and functional MRI scans to evaluate the drugs' effects.
Key findings include:
- Sildenafil increased blood flow in both large and small brain vessels as measured by ultrasound and MRI scans.
- Sildenafil enhanced the blood flow response to carbon dioxide, indicating improved cerebrovascular function.
- Both sildenafil and cilostazol lowered blood vessel resistance in the brain. Sildenafil caused fewer side effects compared to cilostazol, particularly with less incidence of diarrhea.

Consequently, Viagra seems to help both small vessel locations.
I need it every day! The Viagra, I mean.
So ‘thinking with the wrong head’ no longer applies?
So, they’re saying it’s good for the head?.
Doesn’t it cause headaches?
Lucky me — my medicare pays 100% for 18 pills every 3 months
Hope my brain is happy with that.
So if Viagra improves brain function it might have an unintended effect on its other use, i.e. “nope, not doing dat!”
yes, according to my wife
I know this first hand as a fact. Its given to premature babies in NICU for the exact same reasons.
Bwahahahaha. So true
Improves brain flow for guys who think with their
I would assume any of the similar drugs (e.g., Cialis) would do the same. Cialis probably even better, in that it last for much longer.
I took Viagra once, never again. My blood pressure went so high I thought I was going to have a stroke. It seems all that stuff does is raise your BP through the roof I assume with the idea that the high BP will ——>. Yeah OK it makes you “functional” but you also risk dying. I’m sticking to the old fashioned way to be functional: Don’t think of Hillary, Pelosi, Helen Thomas or any other democrat
So the two heads are no longer mutually exclusive??
I asked Doctor about the risk of this stuff and they said none.
But I do feel a bit more stressed for the time it’s in my system. Approaching 24 hours.
Maybe more sex prevents dementia.
That’s very unusual. They normally lower blood pressure.
In fact, they were being researched as a blood pressure medicine when the “side” effect what discovered by horny Boston University researchers who then used it as a party drug.
Ron Jeremy last I read was pretty much gone mentally.
Exception to the rule?
