60 Roosters With Razor Blades Attached to Their Wings Sent to Shocked N.J. Animal Rescue
NJ.COM ^ | May. 24, 2024

By Nyah Marshall | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com Funny Farm Rescue and Sanctuary in Atlantic County initially agreed this month to take in four roosters rescued from an alleged cockfighting ring.

But, when a truck arrived, there were 60 noisy birds instead.

“My volunteer called me and said, ‘Oh, there’s a couple more than what you had thought,’” Laurie Zaleski, founder of Funny Farm Rescue and Sanctuary said on Wednesday.

“I went there and the roosters were in cat carriers and there was 60 of them,” Zaleski said. “They were all crowing simultaneously and I literally almost started to cry.”

Each of the roosters arrived on May 4 with razor blades attached to their wings, which were probably used in a vicious form of cockfighting that left the birds bloodied. Zaleski had to remove the razor blades one by one using a wire cutter.

“The razor was almost like an earring but around the bone of their arm, it was horrible,” Zaleski said. “I’ve never seen that before in my life.”

Zaleski and her team did not have enough cages or volunteers to handle the unexpected number of animals. The sanctuary, which is located in the Mays Landing section of Hamilton Township, was preparing for the Spring Festival it was hosting the next morning, she said.

The roosters needed to be quarantined from other animals for at least 30 days to ensure they were free of illnesses. And, the birds had to be separated from each other to prevent them from fighting.

Louisiana was the last state to outlaw it. But still legal in Puerto Rico. It’s illegal to be a spectator in 43 states.

Another unsavory animal activity out there is “bush track” horse racing. It is not regulated or sanctioned by any organization. Horses are drugged with no restrictions. I found out about it several years ago when a couple came to look at some of my young horses. They barely spoke English and didn’t really seem to know anything about horses. When they told me they raced I told them mine were show and working horses, not race horses. They didn’t care. Needless to say I invited them to leave. I checked it out and found out they were bush racing in several places. Really under the radar.

I have heard of razor knives on the spurs of roosters.

One rooster killed his owner with a slash to the femoral one day.

But on the wings? Will need more research.

Been cock fights in Mexico. Blades were tied with dental floss to the spurs above the ankle, facing down and backwards. They actually had a respected third party handicap the upcoming bout, by giving the perceived underdog a larger blade. Last thing they do is pierce a lime over each blade to remove any poison cheat. Then the birds are held face to face while plucking out neck feathers to get them worked up. Fights are generally quick, much betting involved. Interesting side memory, if a chicken turns from fight, it’s over and the owner instantly kills the bird for its lack of courage. I think that was the hardest part to watch.

Why the hell anyone would want to watch that is beyond me.

The old southern dogfight circuit was different than the modern ghetto version. Dogs would grab each other, hold on, and push and shove. They’d break them apart periodically, re-pitting them if they were both game. If fatalities occurred, it was from dehydration

There used to be cock fights in Oklahoma several years back. Lots of people around here raised fighting cocks. There is a Mexican family not far from here that has let their fighting cocks run free. I often see the cocks when I drive by.
Easy to recognize. The birds are small and scrawny but colorful!

I drove by a barn over in Oklahoma and to me it was just a tin barn. Later it was found to be a fighting ring for cock fights.

Same here. Never heard of wing razors.

Reminds me of an old joke about the fighting cock and the fighting parrot. Not for here!

Hey New Jersey, welcome to Mexico. Cockfighting is very common south of the border. Also dog fighting.

I grew up in Connecticut, and was reading on an old resort/amusement park called Savin Rock in West Haven, CT. It was started up in the late 19th century and closed down in the '60s.

Among the many attractions there, cockfighting was among them. This was in a well-populated, not yet downscale, industrial coastal area in New England. (The cock-fights ended well before the '60s)

We are not as far from some of this stuff as we like to imagine.

Cool. I got Nemo ( home page) in Eugene, OR, back in the ‘80s. I walked past his house about a half block away, and he was on a chain just long enough to be outside his fence. He turned to look at me, and I fell in love.

About a week later, I was walking my dog in a neighborhood cemetery, and he came running up to play. I took him back to his house, and his family was happy to get him back. I forget exactly what I said. but part of it was “pitbull,” and they stopped, and said “What?” and I told them that he was a pit. He had a smaller head than he did as an adult, but he was about 6 months old, and clearly a Staffordshire Terrier. They had no idea. Anyway, they asked if I knew anyone that wanted him (though they knew their kids would be devastated). I said I’d go ask a friend, and half-way to his house, I turned around and went back and got him, for myself. Taught him to retrieve ducks, later in life. Had him for 12 years.

I love animals. This is a disgrace. I love dogs, and sleep next to them when possible. Bugs, spiders, different story.

Yes, those birds were born to fight.

It is cruel to prevent them from fighting.

I used to have some free range Silver Pheasant. The lead rooster used to love it when a hawk came down to play.
