NASA is defunct. Paralyzed by red tape, DEI, incompetence let alone a desire to CRASH AND BURN IT from within.

Hand it ALL over to SpaceX where a strong vision led by Elon Musk and the TALENT to make it happen are alive and well.

I’m wondering if the heat shields now contain some kind of “environmentally friendly” substance that isn’t as durable under extreme conditions like the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo heat shields were. It’s happened before, with the Shuttle. Foam insulation on the Shuttle’s external fuel tank came loose on launch and impacted the leading edge of Columbia’s wing. We know what happened there…

Yeah. There is absolutely no reason that Starliner should’ve taken this long from the beginning of development until now, and it’s STILL buggy.

The problem is that NASA is run by the government. If it were private, like spaceX, we might actually be walking on the Moon by now.

No small part of the problem is Bill Nelson, a smarmy, puffed up, superficial type of person. Nelson had no significant administrative experience in government, the military, or business before becoming the administrator of NASA. In contrast, the legendary James E. Webb was a no-nonsense type with experience in all three and put the US space program firmly on course to the Moon.

From wiki:
AVCOAT was used for the heat shield on NASA’s Apollo command module.[5] In its final form, this material was called AVCOAT 5026–39

I should have read farther, also from wiki:
Although AVCOAT was not used for the Space Shuttle orbiters, NASA is using the material for its next generation Orion spacecraft.[6] The Avcoat to be used on Orion is reformulated to meet environmental legislation that has been passed since the end of Apollo
