Study suggests daily consumption of olive oil reduces chances of developing dementia (Half a teaspoon of olive oil a day reduced dementia risk 28%)

A team of researchers has found evidence that daily consumption of olive oil may reduce the chances of developing dementia.

In their study, the group analyzed data for thousands of people included in two separate health databases and found that those people who consumed at least 7 g of olive oil daily were less likely to die from dementia-related ailments.

Prior research has suggested that following the Mediterranean diet can lead to healthier outcomes for most people. The diet tends to stress consuming legumes, vegetables, nuts, fish, dairy and olive oil. In this new study, the research team found evidence that the heavy use of olive oil in such diets may be one of its most significant factors.

To learn more about possible health benefits of regularly consuming olive oil, the researchers studied patient data for more than 60,000 women included in the Nurses' Health Study and more than 31,000 men included in the Health Professionals Follow-up Study. Both databases include historical information, following patients for up to 30 years. They also include data regarding cause of death.

The researchers found that 4,751 of the 92,383 patients listed in the two databases had died from dementia-related causes. In comparing diet information, they found that those who had consumed at least a half-teaspoon of olive oil per day over the course of the study years were 28% less likely to have died from diseases related to the development of dementia.

The team suggests that consumption of a Mediterranean diet, with a strong emphasis on olive oil, may reduce the chances of developing dementia by inhibiting inflammation caused by other factors.

I’ve completely switched over to regular olive oil or extra light, which I use for baking...I do however have some crisco for pies, which I don’t make that often....

Apparently, only the extra virgin has the polyphenols that are so beneficial to us. I like to deep fry some foods, so I have to use vegetable oil or peanut oil for that. I usually use butter for pastry and biscuits, but butter is getting sky high, so I may have to switch to shortening or lard.

Sounds good. I just steam potatoes. easiest way and preserves more nutrients.
I don’t like to cook, so easy works for me, My mom didn’t like to cook either, nor my sister.

My dad owned restaurants, cooked great Sunday dinners. His unforgettable advice: Buy the best food you can afford and do as little to it as possible. Have rosemary and thyme in the cabinet.

I've found this guy "Bobby Parrish" to have some helpful videos on youtube.   You might want to take a look at this one.

"You're Buying Fake Olive Oil...Here's How To Avoid It!" (Bobby Parrish) [8:02]

One of the brands he recommends is "California Olive Ranch - 100% California".   (That company also make one using oils from several other countries, but he says don't get that one, just the 100% California one.)

He also recommends some other brands in that video.

"I do have some, but I really don’t like the taste."

If you are talking about the OO that's used for cooking, try adding a little butter to it. Does wonders for the taste!

I guess I will give it a try. My brain is messed up and could turn into dementia, according to the 5 hours of memory testing I took in December. I am already eating low-carb (not overweight), 1 tablespoon of coconut oil, and 2 tablespoons of ACV, avocados, no dairy. Supposed to drink coconut milk and eat plain coconut yogurt. I eat between the hours of 12 and 8. She would like me to increase my fast by another hour. She’s a wonderful neurologist but I never stop thinking about food.

I want to eat something I like.

Another food item that folks can consider eating, is walnuts.   Here's a few links to articles relating to the benefits of eating walnuts for brain health.

(Besides, walnuts kind of look like brains!)     🙂
