The MONTHLY Gardening Thread is a gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to/removed from our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a MONTH Ping List, but we DO post to the thread all throughout the month. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!
Most of us have been using Postimages. It’s one more step for me for up-loading, but if I direct link from FB, they’re gone too soon. Jerks! It’s not like they can’t afford the bandwidth. ;)
NEVER! Is it Friday, Yet? Is it Friday, Yet? :)
OK...... have at it.
My educated guess on your Sage leaves is Spider Mites. They are TINY and they do pierce holes in the leaves as they suck out the sap.
Invest in some insecticidal soap (or make your own) or Neem oil spray.

Re: Blueberries - you sound like Beau and his Hascaps (Honeyberry) shrubs. He wants them in the worst way, and doesn’t have the best of luck with his crops. He also ignores them and then complains when they don’t produce enough. ;)
I can get the soap stuff tomorrow, as I have to go in to the OKC area then . . .Does Diatomaceous Earth have any success with spider mites, do you know?
Aha, never mind! I need to start opening links BEFORE replying to the original post. Heh. I even think I have a clean, dry spray bottle here at the house. Many thanks!
Success! And no snakes or turtles were harmed! :)
True. Having 10 acres just buys you privacy. Its a very old woods and home to a lot of wildlife.
No. DE is for larger bugs and creepy-crawly things.

‘Think of DE as microscopic pieces of jagged, broken glass and you’ll understand how it works better,’ says Bob Gilbert of Blue Sky Pest Control. ‘With this in mind, always be careful when using DE as breathing it can be irritating, and potentially dangerous, to the applicator’s lungs.’ It’s a good idea to wear protective glasses and a dust mask.
We used all our own saved seeds except for 3 broccoli plants and 2 shishito pepper plants. The price of plants goes up every year. Tonight is the first night everything will be out on the patio in small pots. Still too early to plant in the garden.
Stars and seeds up up. Because we have a lot of very tall fir trees, we don’t get as much sun on the open garden area as we would like. Hub may cut down one or two more that block southern exposure.
When we moved to this place, we saw another property with 3 acres and lots of privacy. It was on a private road with a 1/2 mile long driveway. Lots of privacy. The owner must’ve been someone either in the tech industry, or someone kinda sorta important, or else in to illegal stuff. He had quite a setup in his basement with computers and all sorts of stuff I don’t quite know what that was. We didn’t inquire further.
Hubby reminded me that he was going to be traveling frequently, and that house was a little bit isolated, like in “The Shining”. He said, what if we get a bunch of snow and you’re locked in without knowing the neighbors? It gave me pause, and do you know what? He was exactly right! Central Indiana had way more snow than usual that year, and all I had was a regular snow shovel! No power tools for inclement weather.
The house we chose was the other one we loved. It had less property, but looks like a neighborhood on the front, and is a very privately wooded property in the back. It’s the best of both worlds. Our neighbors all appreciate privacy as much as we do. We are there for each other in emergencies, but leave each each other alone unless asked. The next door neighbor is an avid hunter, so we get some of his “extras” and never turn them down. Yesterday I gave his wife a container full of fresh oregano starts that was overgrown in my herb garden. It’s a really good relationship.
That sounds like a really nice set up!
I didn’t know Hummers liked the scarlets. I’ll definitely plant a bunch. Thanks for the tip on the blossoms
Are either of those being types non-hybrid? I have some lake something or others in the basement, came with one of those seed packs for preppers.
Little Buddy overheated a bit - I could smell something like rubber or a belt. I quit on the bank & mowed the rest of the place after letting LB cool off a bit (& made sure the mower deck belts were clear of debris). Got the rest of the place done just as the sun went down behind the mountain. I went back to the bank in cooler temps & was able to finish it.
Per the interview with Amy Tan, she got Lymes & that gave her epilepsy so she can’t go on birding trips, etc. Fortunately, her back yard works & she originally wanted to be an artist, but knew her parents wouldn’t be happy with that. She seems to have gotten to a ‘really good place’ with her backyard birds & art. The interview was on NPR if there’s a way to go back & find it.
Hit the grocery store and grabbed 9 more Shitito seedlings. Not all they have because they still have a ton, plus a lot of other peppers and quite a few varieties of tomatoes too. More Sun Sugar, Mortgage Lifter, Black Krim(both indeterminate). They have nothing in their ad and no signs for the deal.
I’m gonna make a trip Sunday and bring some seed trays and load up for $1.50 for 8-12 inch tall seedlings.
Is repurposed green olive brine the stuff leftover in a jar of green olives?
Yes.
Yes.
