Paralyzed man who can walk again shows potential benefit of stem cell therapy

A man who was paralyzed from the neck down after a surfing accident seven years ago is now able to stand and walk on his own, thanks in part to a potentially groundbreaking stem cell treatment.

Chris Barr was the very first patient in a Mayo Clinic study that collected stem cells from his own stomach fat, expanded them in a laboratory to 100 million cells and then injected the cells into Barr's lumbar spine.

Over five years after undergoing the therapy, Barr said he is continuing to gain more independence and get faster at walking.

"I never dreamed I would have a recovery like this," Barr told ABC News' Will Reeve. "I can feed myself. I can walk around. I can do day-to-day independent activities."

Barr shared an update with Reeve on his own progress as Mayo Clinic published new data showing the success of the stem cell treatment in a clinical trial involving 10 patients, including Barr.

According to the trial's results, published Monday in the journal Nature Communications, seven of the 10 patients experienced increased strength in muscle motor groups and increased sensation to pinpricks and light touch.

Cooler yet they are your own stem cells. There’s a clinic here that does it. They draw some blood, spin the stem cells out of it and inject them into the injured area. Pretty magical having your body heal itself.

Yes. That’s even cooler.

I haven’t heard much, or anything really, about fetal stem cell use lately. Maybe it just fell by the wayside.

Well that’s just great except they let the word out. NOW, it will be patented, proprietied, price gouged and/or prohibited from anyone not DEI approved. The FDA will over regulate it to make it so expensive nobody can afford it because of the paperwork.

Embryonic stem cell research was never anything but a transparent attempt to justify abortion. For the most part, it was a disaster medically too — there were many more bad side-effects than cures.

In the trial 7 of 10 patients had improvements and three did not. Still a great result for a trial.

there is a clinic here that does this and they are now doing stuff like ACL repairs on pro athletes and avoiding surgery entirely

I had platelet replacement therapy to repair some tendons that seemed hopeless and the result was unbelievably successful

Decades ago, I read an article about scientists finding the substance the body creates to stop nerve cells from growing (in wrong areas). Haven’t seen anything about it sense.
