That number of ER visits is up 50% from 2016 through 2022, the Los Angeles Times reports. However, during that same period, the number of skiers and snowboarders hitting the slopes remained mostly the same in California.
“It’s a wonderful sport, but if you ask me, I notice a bit of a difference in courtesy,” said Joann Shimizu Wood, a Southern California resident who has been skiing since 1976. “We used to say, as we were coming downhill to whoever was downhill from us, ‘On your right! On your left!’ as we’re passing them.”
Wood said she now hardly ever hears that verbal cue or courtesy despite skiers and snowboarders barreling down the slopes, many of whom may be less experienced or capable.
Reckless behavior was made worse by skiers using marijuana, magic mushrooms or getting drunk before hitting the slopes, locals said.
“You’re sitting on the lift and it smells like a skunk up here,” skier James Travers said of smelling weed. “It should smell like pine trees.”
Another major contributor involves people so focused on taking selfies or capturing videos for their social media page that they become unaware of who or what is going on around them.

“...a bit of difference in courtesy....”? It ain’t just on the slopes.
Unexpected!
I wonder if there is any activity that is not affected by the decline in manners and the increase in drug use.
Probably has nothing to do with legalized pot. Sure would be an interesting datapoint, though.
Anyone can be a DEI incompetent...at work or at play.
Gotta Admit. I didn’t expect racism on a thread about dope smoking ski boarders.
what I noticed on a recent ski trip is that almost everyone wears a helmet now.
Which you might at first “think” makes everyone safer.. but not necessarily! Because the helmet itself is a danger to others. It is one thing to get hit by another skier it is an entirely different thing to get hit by another skiers helmet.
And people may not be afraid of taking risks — “Hey, I’m wearing a helmet! It’s not like I could get hurt or anything!”
But on the bright side, Global Warming will make all of these accidents a thing of the past.
Hammer, nail, etc.
DEI isn’t just about racism. It’s about tolerance of anyone (LGBTQ, women, midgets, dolts, idiots, weed smokers, pink-haired-nose-ringed-tattoed girls)...anyone who couldn’t cut the mustard and needs a safe space.
Are you playing the Fanny Willis race-card?;-)
I believe your lift ticket still has a disclaimer, something about this sport being dangerous and you can get hurt or killed. You puts on the board (or skis) you take the risk and SOME get hurt.
Absolutely.
It’s EVERYWHERE.
The snow is a lot harder now than it was before the far left liberals created the “climate crisis”. A lot more “slope rash”.
Indeed it is. I believe there is an element of such people actually wanting someone to parent them (having never been properly raised), and correct their behavior. That, maybe, and the fact that they’re obnoxious, self-absorbed jackasses.
Ergo, I think something else is at work here...other than just dope and/or alcohol.
something similar happened with American football. The more they padding and helmets they started wearing the more injuries.
Both.
Stop grooming so tight and accidents will drop by 80%.
What do you have against midgets?
