Australian geologists have solved the mystery of what triggered and sustained an extreme ice age that gripped the Earth more than 700 million years ago. The study, published in the journal Geology, reveals how the Earth's thermostat works and how sensitive the climate is to changes in atmospheric carbon dioxide.
Low volcanic activity and rock weathering The researchers used plate tectonic models to simulate the evolution of the Earth's surface and carbon dioxide emission from underwater volcanoes. They found that the onset of the ice age coincided with a period of very low volcanic activity, which reduced the amount of greenhouse gas in the atmosphere.
They also discovered that a large volcanic province in Canada formed before the ice age was eroded by glaciers and rain, further lowering carbon dioxide levels by absorbing it from the air.
Geologists reveal what caused the 57-million-year freezing on EarthSturt Formation glacial deposits from the Sturtian Glaciation circa 717–664 million years ago in the northern Flinders Ranges, Australia, close to the Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary. Research lead author Dr. Adriana Dutkiewicz from the School of Geosciences, the University of Sydney, pointing to a thick bed of glacial deposits.
The study's lead author, Dr. Adriana Dutkiewicz from the University of Sydney, said: "Imagine the Earth almost completely frozen over. That's just what happened about 700 million years ago; the planet was covered in ice from the poles to the equator, and temperatures dropped. We now think we have cracked the mystery: it was caused by historically low volcanic carbon dioxide emissions, aided by weathering of a large pile of volcanic rocks in Canada."

Earth is not 57M years old. If you extrapolate from the 20K - 40K RC values they’ve gotten for dinosaur soft tissue (and just plug that into the standard 24-hour clock model), you get an age of a few hundred thousand to a few million years, but not ten million and certainly not 57 million.
We are talking 57 million years ago..they talk like it was 10 years ago.
More EVs will fix all of that.
Oops, I thought it was because of a gigantic umbrella placed in orbit by the dinosaurs.
So now we are being told we need to be carbon neutral. Isn’t that kind of like what they are saying happened 700M years ago.
The study’s lead author, Dr. Adriana Dutkiewicz from the University of Sydney, said: “Imagine the Earth almost completely frozen over. That’s just what happened about 700 million years ago; the planet was covered in ice from the poles to the equator, and temperatures dropped.

Well that’s just horse puckey. Salt water would not freeze that way. The reason why today’s continents freeze and thaw in 100,000 year cycles is the distribution of continents. Today the southern hemisphere is all but devoid of continents. The Milankovitch orbital cycle shows that whenever the southern oceans point at the sun during earth’s closest orbital paths to the sun it warms the earth and we experience interglacials.
Interglacials last 20,000 years and ice ages last 80,000 years.
Seems like we’re in the sweet spot right now.
“The result was that atmospheric carbon dioxide fell to a level where glaciation kicks in - which we estimate to be below 200 parts per million, less than half today’s level.”
“You don’t SOLVE anything with computer models”
I once attended a forest growth modeling class. The instructor’s opening statement: “All models are wrong. Some are useful.”
Wow. Could somebody make sure the IPCC, WEF and Al and John get this, Pronto.
“The study also has implications for the future of the Earth, as it shows how the climate can change dramatically due to natural processes.”
Heh. If they were right, human activity has the best chance at staving off the next glaciation period.
Rather, they seem hellbent on triggering it.
so greenhouse gas is a good thing ?
I don’t trust scientists anymore. Just more propaganda.
$cience.
LOL how true.
Nothing new about this Snowball Earth has been known for some time now.
I took a class in ecosystem modeling around 1980. The instructor said the same thing. In essence, he said modeling helped you find flaws in what you thought you knew, and comparing the predictions of a model with the measured results that followed helped you think of what was might be missing.
The model helped you explore reality, but it was the reality that mattered.
If the model was accurate enough, it allowed useful but limited predictions. Part of the problem, he said, was that not only did we not know all the variables, but that we didn’t even know HOW MANY variables existed.
What caused it? Just a WAG, but maybe low temperatures?
You're RIGHT as RAIN about that.
Theory Smeary... it's just MORE PROPAGANDA designed to sway WEAK MINDS.
These THEORIES are mostly BULL$HIT designed to sway people to allow science and the Government to DIG even DEEPER into your billfold.! WHY do I say that?
It's very SIMPLE... the EARTH is a SELF-SUSTAINING SYSTEM completely under GOD'S GUIDANCE.
“”The study also has implications for the future of the Earth, as it shows how the climate can change dramatically due to natural processes.””
As long as the computer model of the ‘natural processes’ makes sure to emphasize the evil C02, the grant money will continue to flow.
I remember a wonderful line from the TV series Cheers. Frazier had just received a year’s extension of his grant/fellowship. He stated ‘thank God, I was afraid I would have to go get a job.’
That is a quote from George Box in a 1976 paper. I first heard it in the '80s, and I've used it ever since. I've been using computer models since my first one in 1967 using a vacuum tube analog computer. I'm still using them now.
