A video posted by the FDNY shockingly reveals how a charging lithium-ion battery sparked a raging fire in a Queens e-bike shop this month.

The video, from King Electronic Hub in Richmond Hill, shows a charging lithium-ion battery surrounded by scooters and boxes shooting up a thick cloud of gray smoke, followed by sparks

...

“It only took two and a half minutes for this exploding lithium-ion battery to fully engulf this e-bike shop in fire,” the text accompanying the video warns.

“When we tell you illegal lithium-ion batteries can be dangerous, WE MEAN IT,” ..

The two-alarm fire on Jan. 6,

...

In the first two weeks of 2024, lithium-ion batteries sparked eight blazes in the Big Apple, injuring three people. In 2023, there were 267 fires caused by lithium-ion batteries, killing 18 and injuring 150.

A horrific November blaze in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, linked to a lithium-ion battery killed three people from three generations of a family, in addition to injuring 14 others.

I haven’t watched the video but is there any indication either the battery or the charger was not OEM or was modified in some way?

What made the battery illegal?

Is that PC?

I thought NYC was a sanctuary city.

Interesting thing is, with all the downside of current batteries and EV’s, a revolution in solid state batteries appears to be coming within the next three years.
They say Tesla is not working on them, but I have to believe he’s going to convert to their use.
I might even buy a current Tesla if the price plunges enough.
But everything is a waiting game for the new batteries.
No or greatly reduced fire risk, lighter, longer range and quicker charging.

Reputable companies install a safety circuit in their lithium batteries.

When you see off-brand lithium batteries that are cheaper than OEM, you can bet they left out the safety circuit. (Think: Chinese knock-off)

“” [Solid state batteries] greatly reduced fire risk, lighter, longer range and quicker charging.””

I will have to research solid state batteries. In the meantime, does anyone know if fast charging damages (physically/lifetime) solid state batteries?

Every serious Li-Ion manual I read states, unequivocally, to charge only to 80%, and do not use under 20%. Fast charging damages the battery, and reduces the lifetime of the battery.

On a related front,

There is a very recent story about Canadian wind and solar power generation during this very cold time. For wind power, when it is very cold, there is much less, or no, windy days. The central mechanism MUST BE kept warm, even when not in use, so Canada is using hydrocarbons to keep them warm. Canadian solar power is also suffering. Canada has vast reserves of hydrocarbons. Two hundred billion barrels of oil, and 200 years worth of natural gas. Again, this is just the known energy. We have only drilled a few miles into the Earth, and only in a few places.

As always, President Trump let the drillers Drill Baby Drill, and we became the Saudi Arabia of oil and natural gas. Inexpensive, abundant energy equals more freedom, and more freedom is anathema to The Ruling Class.

The real ‘greening of the Earth’ occurs with more C02. The drillers and explorers should be given awards for developing more energy for us, and more C02 for the plant world.

What made the battery illegal?

Read: Counterfeit battery. Most likely from China and did not include the safety circuit that prevents this from happening.

Good thing E-bikes and discos didn’t intersect in time, otherwise you might have headlines that read “Disco Inferno.”
