I am Ukrainian. My country has been invaded by Russia. In this video I will tell you what happened on the six-hundred-sixty-eighth day of the war.
Day 668: Dec 23
Today, I will analyze the Ukrainian strategic situation.
Despite advancing by around 15 kilometers in the Melitopol and Bedyank directions, Ukrainian forces did not manage to translate tactical gains into operationally significant results. Ukrainian commanders realized that they underestimated the Russian defenses and, in order to avoid unnecessary losses, changed their tactics from heavy mechanized assaults to small infantry assaults already in the first weeks. Ukrainians reached the tactical heights between Orikhiv and Tokmak to, at least, secure their tactical gains before the bad weather arrived and froze the front line.
The freshest updates suggest that the snow, rain, and fog do not allow Ukrainians or Russians to actively move around in the region. The soil in southern Ukraine is the softest, making the fields extremely difficult to pass, impeding the ground operations significantly. The weather conditions and the ground quality in Avdiivka are not much better, leaving very small windows between rains and forcing the commanders to wait until the ground dries up at least a little bit before launching mechanized attacks or counterattacks. In the most northern part of the front line, the snow frequently melts due to the constant fluctuations in temperature, causing the same problems.
The Ukrainian High Command stated that in light of the expectedly bad winter weather conditions, they made a decision to transition to defensive operations. As the intensity of clashes in the south decreased, Russian forces launched a series of offensive operations in the east to seize the initiative. So, in short, Ukrainians transitioned to defensive operations because the bad weather would lead to unjustified losses, and Russians transitioned to offensive operations because they can.
The setting, therefore, is the following: the southern line is largely inactive, in the east, Ukrainians are defending against the Russian offensive, and in the Kherson region, Ukrainians are drawing in Russian forces to undermine the Russian offensive capabilities. During the recent Direct Line with Putin forum, Putin claimed that Russians have around 600 thousand soldiers in Ukraine. A bit earlier, president Zelensky claimed that Ukrainians also have around 600 thousand soldiers, so no party has manpower superiority. The Ukrainian High Command recently stated that the most important objective for Ukrainian forces in the near future is to inflict as much damage to the Russian military as possible while conserving manpower and resources for offensive efforts.
Achieving manpower superiority during the defensive operation is natural because the defending party incurs much lower losses compared to the attackers. The current weather conditions make Russian attacks even costlier. Some Ukrainian analysts claimed that the ratio of losses in Avdiivka is 7 to 1 in Ukrainian favor. Such a setting led to 15 thousands Russian losses over the last 2 months, and, right now, Russians are conducting 5 such offensives, some of which engage at least twice am many troops as in Avdiivka.
In order to increase the ratio even more, the Ukrainian command finally ordered to build comprehensive lines of defense, basically like the Russians did in the south. So, Ukrainian forces use this period of challenging weather and ongoing Russian offensive operations to establish and consolidate defensive positions. Moreover, while Russians are committing the best forces to conduct these costly offensives, such as Wagner forces and elite motorized units with the most modern tanks and equipment, Ukrainians are removing their elite forces for replenishment and preparation for future offensives.
For example, the most elite assault brigades launched a recruitment and training campaign to create the most physically capable and prepared assault units. The most elite drone detachments have launched a recruitment campaign and will train thousands assault drone operators. And this is extremely important because the Ukrainian Chief-in-Command Zaluzhny concluded in his assessment of the counteroffensive that the next breakthrough on the front line can only be achieved with technology and innovation, in particular, drones. Furthermore, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense announced that their key focus in 2024 will be the mass production of drones.

Millions of Ukrainians today are waiting for the first star to appear in the evening sky, heralding the arrival of Christmas. A holiday of many shades. A great church holiday. An important national holiday. A family holiday. Christmas, which is always loved by children and awaited by adults. Christmas, which fills hearts with light. Christmas, which always gives hope.
For the second year now, we have learned another form of it, another dimension. This is Christmas in times of full-scale war. Christmas with a different mood, context, and flavor.
And a family dinner at home is not the same as usual. Because not all of us are at home. And not everyone has a home. And it has become much more important not what dishes are on the table, but what people are at the table. And how precious it is to have them around.
How important it is to stay in touch with those who are not around, who are defending Ukraine now. What a relief it is to see a “double tick” on the screen meaning the message was delivered and read. How crucial it is to get a response from them.
How our gifts, values, and traditions have changed. How today it’s not so much about how we decorate our homes, but rather how we protect them and clean up the mess, sweeping the enemy out of our home. How we rejoice at seeing the first star in the evening sky and not seeing enemy missiles and “Shaheds” in it.
How joyously and sonorously sound the hundreds of our carols, and just three words: “air raid over.”
How our wishes have changed. How children’s wishes have changed. From the simple and usual “I wish for dad to come home early from work” to “I wish for dad to come back.”
For all fathers, husbands, brothers, grandfathers to come back. Mothers, wives, sisters. To return victorious. All those who are meeting the Christmas Eve in the trenches with weapons in their hands, facing the enemy. All our warriors of light. Guardian angels of Ukraine, who prove to us every day: good will prevail, light will prevail, one must have steadfast spirit, and strong faith. Those who prove that miracles do exist. But we have to create them ourselves, obtain them ourselves, make the impossible possible.
Every day we pray for each of them. We pray for an end to the war. We pray for victory.
We will do so today as well. Wherever we are. Wherever we spend Christmas. Today, all Ukrainians are together. We all meet Christmas together. On the same date, as one big family, as one nation, as one united country. And today our common prayer will be stronger than ever. The people’s prayer. Today, it will unite millions of voices - more than ever before. And it will resonate today without a time difference of two weeks. Resonate together with Europe and the world.
And this is a unique prayer. For people, for peace, for justice, a prayer for life. And today it will be heard in different parts of the world, coming from the hearts of different people, in different languages. And even from different denominations. Because this is a prayer for life, and it has no borders.
In troubled times, as we defend our land and our souls, we are making our way to freedom. The way to gaining comprehensive independence, including spiritual one. Freedom of our faith from the ideology of slavery. From a cult that has nothing human or sacred within it. One that brings violence, aggression, hatred. One that takes away security and peace, takes away other people’s lands and human lives. Yet one that will be defeated. By the power of faith, the power of truth, the power of law, the power of justice, the power of our Ukraine.
Right now, I am in the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra. Majestic. Iconic. Ours.
A thousand-year old symbol of Ukrainian history, our culture, religion, Orthodoxy, and all of Eastern Christianity. A proof of our unyielding fortitude, resilience, tough challenges and ability to overcome them. Invariably reviving and growing.
Throughout its history, this place has experienced numerous upheavals and hardships. Profanation, desecration, looting. The Horde, the Nazis, the Soviet times. This place was captured, burned, and destroyed. But no one has ever been able to destroy it completely and forever. The Lavra has always withstood to be reborn again. And after each blow, it not only recovered, but grew bigger and stronger. Because it was and remains a place of power for people. A source of hope and spirit for our people. For everyone who believes. In the victory of truth. The victory of Ukraine.
Christmas Eve is the time of the longest nights of the year. But tomorrow the day starts getting longer, the light starts prevailing. The light is getting stronger. And step by step, day by day, the darkness retreats.
And in the end, darkness will lose. Evil will be defeated.
Today, this is our common goal, our common dream, and this is what our common prayer is for today. For our freedom. For our victory. For our Ukraine. For the day when we can all come together at home in a peaceful year of peaceful Christmas. And say to each other: “Christ is born!”
Dear Ukrainians! I extend my Christmas congratulations to all of you! May the light of faith reign in your souls, the light of hope fill your hearts, and love and prosperity fill your homes.
As our ancestors used to say and sing: “Let the sky and the earth bear fruit. Let the sky bear stars, and let the earth bear flowers. God grant it!”

Troops of Ukraine’s Lyut Assault Brigade stormed a Russian trench and captured an enemy soldier during a close-quarters gun battle near Bakhmut. The Ukrainian soldiers from the ‘Tsunami’ regiment were patrolling the battlefield when they discovered the trench. Intense first-person footage shows the men jumping into the trench and proceeding with caution before they attacked. Lyut Assault Brigade is a special police force, which consists of the Safari regiment, Tsunami and Luhansk-1 Battalions. Myrotvorets, Skif and Zakhid police battalions also joined Lyut at the start of 2023 – their motto, Lyut Brigade means ‘turn your rage into a weapon’. The Brigades targeted enemy soldiers during the summer as they attempted to win back positions taken by Russians. Corruption and fear are hindering effort to rebuild army
POKROVSK, Ukraine—During a break from fighting the Russians, an avuncular rifleman recalled how he was going for a haircut one day when he was press-ganged into joining the Ukrainian army.
Three recruitment officials accosted the stocky, gray-haired 47-year-old outside the barber shop in his small hometown, ordered him to get in a car and detained him for two days in a dark room at the local draft center until he had signed up.
“I got my haircut at the training camp,” he said.
Now known by his military call sign Dubok, the former electrical engineer offered to serve as a technician in the rear. “But to get that job, you have to pay bribes,” he said. Instead, he was sent to join an infantry unit depleted by months of hard fighting. His battalion of the 47th Mechanized Brigade is defending the city of Avdiivka against waves of Russian assaults, the biggest current battle in Russia’s relentless war on Ukraine.
“Physically, I can’t handle this,” Dubok said of front-line combat. “I’m deeply disappointed that I’m no longer 20.”
Ukraine needs to rebuild its battered army. The infantry, which bears the brunt of deaths and injuries, is chronically short of men after nearly two years of resisting Russia’s full-blown invasion.
The most highly motivated fighters volunteered early. Those who haven’t been killed or wounded often say they are exhausted. Ukraine now relies on the draft—and sometimes on rounding up men—to replenish the ranks.

First Lady of Ukraine Olena Zelenska held traditional Christmas readings at the Okhmatdyt Children’s Specialized Hospital. This marks the third such event since 2021, featuring tea-time readings that take place at the hospital with the participation of the President’s wife.
The purpose of the event is to create a circle of support, festive mood and home comfort for children treated at Okhmatdyt. Each time, the First Lady chooses a book that is motivating and can be of interest to both children and adults.
This time, the book “Keys of Power” by Ukrainian psychologist and writer Svitlana Royz was chosen. It is dedicated to the topic of emotions and their conscious experience by children. How to cope, for example, with the fear of the dark? How can a child express anger without behaving aggressively and at the same time suppressing the emotion within? Why are we sad and is it possible to make friends with sadness? How can the power of guilt be transformed into responsibility? And why is it really so important to gain the power that comes from joy? How can we learn to rejoice and how does joy invigorate us like a battery?
“This is the second time we are holding meetings amidst the enemy’s invasion and our country’s fight for life. But the opportunity to get together on a winter evening to read something that will give us the strength to live and keep fighting is all the more precious. This is also the goal of the All-Ukrainian Mental Health Program, so today’s book with psychological advice in a playful way can really help many children and even adults,” Olena Zelenska noted.
This year’s tea-time readings were attended by patients of the Bone Marrow Transplantation Department of the National Children’s Specialized Hospital “Okhmatdyt”. Together with the Olena Zelenska Foundation and the partners of the Christmas on the Doorstep initiative, the First Lady handed over gifts to the children treated at Okhmatdyt. She thanked H&M, the Lego Foundation, the Ukrainian Food Banks Federation, and the Ukrainian embassies in Sweden and Denmark for their cooperation.
“May all Ukrainians have enough strength to overcome all challenges. I wish everyone to find their own keys to strength – reliable and inexhaustible,” the President’s wife summarized.

Day 669 of the russian full-scale military aggression against Ukraine continues.
The enemy continues to ignore the laws and customs of war, uses terror tactics, launches strikes, and shells both military and civilian targets. The enemy actively uses tactical aircraft and FPV quadcopters, conducts assault operations with the support of armored vehicles. The adversary has increased the number of artillery shelling. Thus, the number of enemy artillery shelling in the operational area of the Khortytsia operational-strategic group exceeds 1,000 each day.
During the day of December 24, there were 48 combat engagements. The enemy launched 29 air strikes, launched 26 MLRS attacks at the positions of Ukrainian troops and various settlements. Unfortunately, the russian terrorist attacks have wounded civilians. Private residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure were destroyed and damaged.
The operational situation in the east and the south of Ukraine remains difficult.
VOLYN and POLISSYA AXIS: no significant changes. No signs of formation of an offensive group. Certain units of the armed forces of belarus continue their missions in the areas bordering Ukraine.
SIVERSHCHYNA and SLOBOZHANSHCHYNA AXIS: the adversary maintains its military presence in the areas of russia bordering Ukraine. The enemy continues its sabotage and reconnaissance activities, shelling Ukrainian settlements from the territory of russia and increases the density of minefields along the state border of Ukraine. More than 20 settlements came under enemy artillery and mortar fire, including Klyusy, Bleshnya, Leonivka (Chernihiv oblast), Seredyna-Buda, Prohres, Volfyne, Basivka, Myropillya (Sumy oblast), Huryiv Kozachok, Veterynarne, Hatyshche, Budarky, Topoli (Kharkiv oblast).
KUPYANSK AXIS: the Ukrainian defenders repelled 15 attacks in the vicinities of Synkivka (Kharkiv oblast) and Stelmakhivka (Luhansk oblast). In that area, the enemy made unsuccessful attempts to break through the defenses of Ukrainian troops. The occupiers launched air strikes in the vicinities of Petropavlivka and Kyslivka (Kharkiv oblast). The invaders fired artillery and mortars at around 10 settlements, including Dvorichna, Synkivka, Petropavlivka, Ivanivka, Berestove (Kharkiv oblast).
LYMAN AXIS: the adversary conducted no offensives. The invaders launched air strikes near Yampolivka and Torske (Donetsk oblast). The enemy fired artillery and mortars at more than 10 settlements, including Nevske, Bilohorivka (Luhansk oblast), Torske, Serebryanka, Verkhniokamyanske, Spirne, Rozdolivka (Donetsk oblast).
BAKHMUT AXIS: the Ukrainian Defense Forces repelled 3 attacks of the adversary near Bohdanivka, Klishchiyivka and Andriyivka (Donetsk oblast). Around 10 settlements caYme under artillery and mortar fire, including Vasyukivka, Bohdanivka, Ivanivske, Klishchiyivka, Andriyivka, New York (Donetsk oblast).
AVDIYIVKA AXIS: the Ukrainian defenders repelled 10 enemy attacks east of Novobakhmutivka, Stepove, Avdiyivka, and 15 more attacks in the vicinities of Pervomaiske and Nevelske (Donetsk oblast), where the enemy made failed attempts to breach Ukrainian defense. Also, the occupiers launched air strikes near Ocheretyne, Tonenke, Avdiyivka (Donetsk oblast). The invaders fired artillery and mortars at the settlements of Keramik, Ocheretyne, Stepove, Avdiyivka, Karlivka, Netailove (Donetsk oblast).
MARYINKA AXIS: the Ukrainian Defense Forces continue to hold back the enemy in the vicinities of Mar’inka and Novomykhailivka (Donetsk oblast). In that area, the adversary, with air support, launched 3 unsuccessful attacks on the positions of Ukrainian defenders. The settlements of Oleksandropil, Krasnohorivka, Kurakhove, Maryinka, Katerynivka, Yelyzavetivka were under artillery and mortar fire from the occupiers.
SHAKHTARSKE AXISA: the enemy conducted no offensives. The occupiers launched an air strike in the vicinity of Staromaiorske (Donetsk oblast). The adversary fired artillery and mortars at around 10 settlements, including Vodyane, Prechystivka, Zolota Nyva, Blahodatne, Urozhaine, Rivnopil (Donetsk oblast).
ZAPORIZHZHIA AXIS: the Ukrainian Defense Forces repelled 3 adversary attacks near Robotyne and south of Hulyaipole (Zaporizhzhia oblast). In that area, the adversary made failed attempts to dislodge Ukrainian troops from their positions. Around 20 settlements, including Levadne, Hulyaipole, Huliaipilske, Orikhiv, Novoandriyivka, Pyatykhatky (Zaporizhzhia oblast), came under enemy artillery and mortar fire.
ODESA operational-strategic group, KHERSON AXIS: the adversary fired artillery at the city of Kherson, the settlements of Tyahynka, Komyshany, Bilozerka (Kherson oblast) and Ochakiv (Mykolaiv oblast).
The enemy did not abandon his intention to drive our units from the left bank of the Dnipro, made 23 failed assaults. The attacks were repelled and the enemy retreated having suffered major losses. The Ukrainian troops are holding the line, continuing to retain their positions and firing for effect on the enemy.
During the day of December 24, the Ukrainian Air Force launched air strikes on 12 concentrations of troops, weapons, and military equipment, 1 ammunition depot and 1 air defense system of the adversary.
The Ukrainian missile troops hit 2 artillery systems and 1 command post of the russian invaders.

After two months, the Russian assault on Avdiivka, a critical Ukrainian strongpoint in eastern Ukraine’s Donbas region, appears to be petering out. Situation in the power system as of 24 December: no electricity shortages recorded, operation of a TPP unit in Donetsk region suspended due to shelling
GENERATION AND CONSUMPTION
No electricity shortages are currently observed and are not expected for the current day.
The electricity demand of consumers will be met by domestic generation and commercial imports.
No blackout schedules are applied in any of the regions. The situation is under control. The power system is balanced.
NETWORK STATUS
Ukrenergo’s 330 kV overhead line in Dnipropetrovsk region was disconnected due to significant power line damage.
Military operations are ongoing in the area.
A 330kV overhead line was also disconnected near a thermal power plant in Donetsk region due to damage to a power line.
CONSEQUENCES OF THE SHELLING
A massive shelling of a thermal power plant in Donetsk region injured 5 employees of the plant. All of them were taken to hospitals. The shelling also damaged the equipment of the power grid and the plant itself. One of the TPP’s units was shut down by the staff. Household consumers were cut off from electricity.
IMPORT/EXPORT
Electricity imports for the current day amount to 18,800 MWh. No exports are planned.

In his Christmas greeting to the peacekeeping forces, Finnish Defence Minister Antti Häkkänen has mentioned Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

DETAILS:
Häkkänen pointed out that “Russia’s policy of force has created a sense of insecurity and uncertainty in Europe, and indirectly around the world”.
“We have seen painful proof that a great power can feel empowered to interfere in the choices of its smaller neighbor and is willing to use military force to achieve its own goals,” he added.
The Finnish defense minister stressed that it is not just a matter of Ukraine’s fate but that of all the countries neighboring Russia: “There is a war going on in Ukraine for the future of the whole of Europe.”
Häkkänen also mentioned that Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine prompted Finland to abandon its neutrality, become a NATO member and sign a defense cooperation agreement with the United States.
BACKGROUND:
-Earlier, EU Diplomacy Chief Josep Borrell had drawn attention to the danger of a Russian victory for the European Union bloc.
-The official also advocated for more robust support for Ukraine, given that Russian President Vladimir Putin is not set to stop his full-scale aggression anytime soon.
