"[February 15, 2015] How to Develop the Situational Awareness of Jason Bourne" - A reprise
http://www.artofmanliness.com/2014/09/15/ooda-loop/ ^ | 2/15/16 | Brett & Kate McKay

“There’s a scene at the beginning of The Bourne Identity where the film’s protagonist is sitting in a diner,
trying to figure out who he is and why he has a bunch of passports and a gun stashed in a safety deposit box.
Bourne also notices that he, well, notices things that other people don’t. “

”That superhuman ability to observe his surroundings and make detailed assessments about his environment?
It’s not just a trait of top secret operatives; it’s a skill known as situational awareness, and you can possess it too. “

”As the names implies, situational awareness is simply knowing what’s going on around you.
It sounds easy in principle, but in reality requires much practice.
And while it is taught to soldiers, law enforcement officers, and yes, government-trained assassins,
it’s an important skill for civilians to learn as well.
In a dangerous situation, being aware of a threat even seconds before everyone else can keep you and your loved ones safe.”

H/T to Combat_Boots “ True, but the actual points on situational awareness, as listed/discussed in the article, are valid. “ (2/15/16)

”WHAT is an ooda ? “

”The OODA Loop — Observe,Orient,Decide, Act.

"The OODA Loop is an oft-cited, but typically misunderstood idea.
If you’ve heard of it, it was most likely presented in a fairly superficial way – as a 4-step decision-making process where the individual or group
who makes it through all the stages the quickest, wins.
That’s one element of the OODA Loop, but there’s much more to it than that."

Tilted Irish Kilt: “ Situational Awareness (learning/ developing the skill )
and overcoming "Normalcy Bias" ( with additional thread hotlinks)
The OODA Loop can be used in business, personal protection, actually in all realms of life
providing you overcome 'Normalcy Bias'.
It is a learned skill that requires ongoing and continual practice which progressively builds upon itself.

Made in The USA :” Situational awareness is something we should be teaching our sons and daughters.” (7/15/16)

P-Marlowe : “Simply put, if you sense something is wrong, it probably is. “ (7/15/16)

5 questions to ask yourself every time your environment changes (walk into a location, go out of a building, get in your car, etc). Mental aid to develop situational awareness.

1) Where am I? If I have to tell someone to get to me, how will I communicate where I am actually located?

2) Where are the exits? If I have to leave, what options are available?

3) Where are the threats? Can be person, animal, or dangerous environment (wet floor, light about to fail, vehicle, etc.)

4) Where are the helps? First aid kit, fire extinguisher, alarm, phone, baseball bat, etc.

5) What is the plan?

I’d much rather have wisdom and discernment from God. All else is failible.

The last I knew, God has given us intellect, memory and eyes to see
These are all gifts from God; it's up to you on how you use and employ these gifts and talents.
Mankind, by its own very nature, is fallible.

I have much to learn about situational awareness, but I think my sharpness grows when I am in a crowded environment. It’s probably why I prefer being in quiet natural places, but I should sharpen my senses there, too.

When dining in restaurants, a lot of law enforcement want their backs to the wall and where they can watch people coming and going. Seasoned travelers will count the number of seat heads between them and an emergency exit on planes.

Son’s best friend was a Secret Service agent & when he flew, he was always armed whether for work or personal. He told the story about checking in to fly back to DC & checking in at the counter. He got on the plane and the stewardess came up to him before taking off & said it so everyone around him could hear if he was their armed SS agent on the plane. Said it pissed him off because it made him a target & he wanted to nap. She basically outed the only help she had if something on that flight went south on the crew.

I liked it because whenever he and my son hung out in DC, he was always armed. My son has CC but only for Virginia and that took him 6 months to get & he has TS clearance!!

FamiliarFace :" I have much to learn about situational awareness,

I think that is true of us all, especially in a crowded environment.
Generally, in times of crisis or chaos, I would avoid large crowds.
Be aware of entrances and exits; never have your back to an entrance.
Keep your head on a swivel, noting any inconsistencies or irregularities that you may observe.
The first rule of OODA Loop is to "Observe", then you can evaluate the situation for the second step,
"Orient" yourself as to what possible intelligent reactions you can take without emotional baggage (risk assessment)
See, you have already completed the first of two steps of the four step OODA Loop.
The next step is to make a "Decision" how best to respond to the situation; what makes common sense, without risk.
Then the last step is to Act on your decision - Just .."Do IT".

Chuck Norris has a much simpler plan. Whenever his environment changes, he asks himself, “Does anyone’s ass need kicking?”

I can only assume what is meant when b4me says this.
Some Pentecostals think they must be in an emotional state to receive continual specific revelation about each daily decision.
Some Calvinists think they must put themselves in a state of willingness to accept and conform to their predetermined fate.
Either one will say he needs “wisdom from God”.
God gives wisdom to those who put the work into their Bible.
God gives wisdom to those who pray for it. James 1:5.

I actually had the opportunity to use the OODA loop once at the grocery store a year or so ago. A woman I encountered thought I had hit her with my cart. I hadn’t, but it was a near miss. I often say, “I’m sorry” or “Excuse me” on situations like this in crowded aisles at the store. She took that as admission of guilt, instead of me being merely polite.

Needless to say, she was on her phone with a friend, and as she talked, I could hear her getting louder and louder as I was walking down the aisle. I realized she was talking about a non-event with me! Several aisles over, I could still hear her carrying on. I knew this situation was only going to get worse for me, so I took action. I left my cart near the front of the store, and left immediately. I have no desire to be the victim that got pummeled by an angry woman in a very public place. I didn’t shop at that grocery store for several weeks. Fight or flight instinct came into play, and she was a lot bigger than me, so flight it was. Not my usual style, but that day, it was the right call.

My daughter dated a boy in HS whose father was a police detective. This was about 15 or 20 years ago. At the graduation party we hosted, he had his face to the exits at all times. He knew where our two gates to the backyard were. He knew where our front door and back door were. He talked very little. It was a little odd, but we all understood. He was ready to act (and protect) if anything happened. I’m quite certain he was carrying, even though few of us were.

I practiced situational awareness. It was useless.

The main awareness you need to learn is surveillance-awareness. Real attacks are planned, everything is controlled, surveillance is the real tool of the only threat you face. The only thing which will protect you is surveillance-awareness.

AnonymousConservative :".. everything is controlled, surveillance is the real tool of the only threat you face.

Agreed ! Most people are oblivious to the surveillance and tracking that occurs every day.
For example, your cellphone is track able within 5 meter according to which cellphone towers to which you are connected (ie.: Jan 6th defendants).
Many of those cellphone additional 'free' downloads track your locations and contacts (ie.: Tik Tok), and may be a security risk - avoid them !
Getting a thruway transponder for interstate travel where you give name, address, and e-mail address resulted in my Alexa app. greeting me by name yesterday (huh ?!??).
Personally, I minimize any additional apps. on my cell phone, not because I am paranoid, but because my travels are no one else's business.
The State police car in the median of the road generally has a 'license plate reader' in the back window which reads all traffic coming and going on a major route.
I try to minimize any unneeded cell apps which increase surveillance, and which affect cellphone battery life.
Like it, or not, we are increasingly in a surveillance society and culture - just keep it to a minimum and be informed and aware.
