Earth’s temperature was off the charts this year, and scientists just confirmed what much of planet already felt coming: 2023 will officially be the hottest year on record.
The analysis from the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service found this year’s global temperature will be more than 1.4 degrees Celsius warmer than pre-industrial levels — close to the 1.5-degree threshold in the Paris climate agreement, and beyond which scientists say humans and ecosystems will struggle to adapt.
Every month since June has been the hottest such month on record, and November piled on. The month was roughly 1.75 degrees warmer than pre-industrial levels, and two days soared beyond 2 degrees, worrying scientists about what this means for the planet in the coming years.
The report comes as delegates from more than 150 countries are in Dubai for COP28, the UN’s annual climate summit, where the discussion over whether to phase out planet-warming fossil fuels has been heated.
“The timing could not be more urgent,” Brenda Ekwurzel, director of climate science at the Union of Concerned Scientists, who is not involved with the report, told CNN.
“Wealthy and high-emitting countries, which have contributed the most to this record-breaking year,” she added, “have a greater responsibility to make a fair, fast and funded phase out of fossil fuels to help limit the increasing extreme weather and climate change impacts.”

Yes, I personally am responsible for the large undersea volcanic eruption that occurred last year and increased the stratospheric water vapor by 15%. That high altitude water vapor is a very strong greenhouse gas, much stronger than a tiny bit of CO2 increase release would be, and was predicted after the eruption to cause 2-3 years of increased temperature worldwide.
Just so everybody knows, we are Personally Responsible for said volcanic eruption. Since we have done this we would like the Global Warming cultists to now refer to us by our newest pronoun: Hephaestus

Wondering how much of this “hottest on record” is affected by warmer than usual temps during what should normally be cooler weather? We have had some of that while experiencing only a small amount of truly unusually hot weather in the summer months. Does one record hot day really make it “hottest on record” for the season?
And of that number, how much of the warming is in the last year, and the year before that?
The last two year’s warming is far too much to be from the slow incremental increase in CO2, and is between 1/3 and 1/2 of the total warming during the time period they define.
An extra 10% of water into the stratosphere in early 2022 seems a more likely candidate.
Coolest year I can ever remember in Eastern Oklahoma Ozarks. Did not have to put the AC on till mid June. Usually it is on in late April.
Thanksgiving was almost as cold as the brutal fall of 1976. Thankfully no wind, snow, sleet or ice yet! That fall and winter of 1977 was used as proof we were entering THE NEW ICE AGE!
Total horse hockey. This was the first summer I could sit out on the porch until noon. Normally, I’d get a furnace of heat when opening the door at 7 am. Their “records”, snort. They must have misplaced the 1980 records when it was 115 degrees and I’d come home to sit in front of the fridge in nothing but a wet towel. They also lost the 2011 records of towns having to haul in water and hire water witchers and rivers ran dry... of course, a lot of the dry river beds were caused by sending our water downstream to the rice fields no thanks to the rice lobby.
Question: What is the “correct” temperature of the planet?
