Walking at a speed of 4 or more km an hour is linked to a significantly lower risk of type 2 diabetes, suggests a pooled data analysis of the available evidence.
Moreover, the faster the speed above 4 km/hour, the lower the risk seems to be, with every 1 km increase in speed associated with a 9% reduction in risk, the findings suggest.
They looked for relevant long-term studies published up to May 2023 and found 10 that were eligible for inclusion. These had all been published between 1999 and 2022 and included monitoring periods ranging from 3 to 11 years for a total of 508,121 adults from the U.S., Japan, and the UK.
Pooled data analysis of the results showed that compared with strolling at less than 2 miles or 3 km/hour, an average or normal walking speed of 2–3 miles or 3–5 km/hour was associated with a 15% lower risk of type 2 diabetes, irrespective of the time spent walking.
Similarly, fairly brisk walking at a speed of 3–4 miles/hour or 5–6 km/hour was associated with a 24% lower risk of type 2 diabetes compared with strolling.
Brisk walking or striding at a speed above 4 miles or 6 km/hour was associated with a reduced risk of around 39%, equal to 2.24 fewer cases of type 2 diabetes in every 100 people.
Every 1 km/hour increase in walking speed was associated with a 9% lower risk of type 2 diabetes, with the minimal threshold of 4km/hour equal to 87 steps/minute for men and 100 steps/minute for women, the findings suggest.
Another factor to consider is reverse causality, whereby participants with faster walking speed might be more likely to be physically active and have better cardiorespiratory fitness, greater muscle mass, and better overall health status.

I walk 3mph................
As an older person right on that A1C edge, I appreciate all your posts. And this one in particular. I’d like to say more, but I’d better quit typing and go out for a walk!
Thanks
IOW, all you fat asses speed it up and quit your waddling. ;-)
.
Don’t fool yourself. Exercise and diet are the key to a good life.
That’s only about 2.5 MPH, which is an average pace for a healthy adult.
Shocking News:
Exercise is good for you!
4 km/hour is a leisurely stroll.
For me as it’s all about concentration. I typically average 3.5 mph on my walks, but if I can keep concentrating on my pace I can average up to 3.85 mph. On an empty track, where there are less distractions and it’s level and consistent I can average about 4.2 mph.
I walk pretty fast. It’s only from the recliner to the bathroom, but it’s every hour. Does that count?

Well, 2 miles a day, 4 days a week at 3mph, including incline walking on my treadmill, and I guess I’m good! Along with not eating processed crap.
Just did my 1-hour lunchtime walk, 3.5 miles.
My average is 2.1 mph but I go up to as fast as 5.1 mph sometimes. My yearly average length of walk is 3.5 miles/day. I plan to keep it up as long as possible. The doctor is very happy with me.
Good for you! Do you do 3.5 miles every day?
I try to do 5-6 miles. I do a walk at lunch and then in the evening around 6-7 PM.
Jeremy Clarkson of Top Gear and The Grand Tour wrote an article about this.

I’m a busy man. I write two newspaper columns every week for The Sunday Times and one for The Sun, I run a farm and I have a brewery. And a shop. I also present two television shows on Amazon and one on ITV. So when I hear that a man of my age should do 10,000 steps a day, I just think: “Right, and how on earth would I find the time to do that?”
-snip-
I do make time to walk the dogs, but I’ve just checked the health app thing on my phone, and it seems that during this daily, hour-long stroll through the woods, I only ever do a maximum of 2,000 steps. So, to do 10,000 steps I’d need to be out there for five hours. And who has five free hours in a day?
Ah, excellent! Do you take a flashlight with you for the 6-7 slot? Or is that mostly in the DST hours? Too dark here. We try to get one walk in every day. Two just doesn’t fit the schedule. Unless we changed it up and did first thing in the morning, and then a mid-afternoon one.
