Yikes, that’s a battle, FRiend, sincere best wishes and thanks for talking about it. I have a 50 year buddy who’s now been in ICU for 13 days after a stroke. Still draining fluid. He’s out of state so phone is all we have. He speaks OK, can text a few words and they will be spelled correctly and can move arms and legs. Makes sense when he talks, though has repeated himself, doesn’t talk often. Doctor told me “he’s doing good”.

My 72 year old neighbor is an unstoppable snow shoveler. Early this year, my wife dispatched an ambulance to his house. It was months before I saw him again. He is still strong as an ox and well coordinated, but his ability to speak was severely compromised. I suspect his hearing is just fine. He is going to speech therapy now. It takes a fair bit of effort on his part and that of a person listening to him to convey a full sentence.

You may be right. But Botox can cause facial paralysis. In any case, his face is a train wreck, and getting worse.

I think he’s had that crooked half-smile for years. There are older pictures of him with the same expression. But he did have brain surgery in 1988 to treat an aneurism, so maybe that left him with his creepy smile. I’ve always just assumed that it was just his arrogant smugness that caused him to smile that way. But who knows? Maybe it’s neurological. It fits his personality either way.

A = Arm Weakness – Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?
S = Speech Difficulty – Is speech slurred?
T = Time to call 911 – Stroke is an emergency. Every minute counts. Call 911 immediately. Note the time when any of the symptoms first appear.
