EV owners report far more problems with their cars and trucks than owners of gas-powered vehicles, according to a new survey.
Vehicles in the burgeoning electric vehicle segment, from model year 2021 through 2023, encountered 79 percent more problems than those with combustion engines, according to a Consumer Reports survey of more than 330,000 car owners.
The research said EV owners most frequently reported troubles with battery and charging systems as well as flaws in body panels and the fit of interior parts.
It noted that EV manufacturers are still learning to construct new types of vehicles, and suggested that their build quality will improve over time and teething issues will be ironed out.
'This story is really one of growing pains,' said Jake Fisher, senior director of auto testing at Consumer Reports. 'It's a story of just working out the bugs and the kinks of new technology.'
But Consumer Reports noted that reliability concerns will cause additional apprehension among prospective buyers, alongside concerns about higher costs, too few charging stations and long charging times.
The growth of EV sales has slowed sharply since last year, and concern has heightened that American consumers are simply not prepared to make the switch from gas-powered cars.
In June 2022, EV sales were growing about 90 percent year over year. But by June of this year the 12-month growth rate had slowed to about 50 percent. Automakers have become increasingly fearful the pace will weaken further.
And this week, about 3,900 auto dealers signed a letter to President Biden asking him to rethink what they described as unrealistic fuel economy and emissions requirements.
'They are not selling nearly as fast as they are arriving at our dealerships, even with deep price cuts, manufacturer incentives and generous government incentives,' the letter said.

We’re no longer a republic.
Until that changes Deep State doesn’t need to convince us, does it...
“Thank God Biden will be gone by 2032, along with his rotten tribe of grifters”
Bending rules, regulations and laws to your favor is the path to riches beyond belief for those who know how to work the system. Biden is a symptom, not a cause. The problem is the lack of education which lets the grifters use people who consider themselves socially conscious to be “activists” in a new religion. Liberalists, climate activists, trans, are adherents to the religion that has supplanted Christianity. All of them are just tools for people who have figured an angle to make themselves rich. If everyone in the Biden administration died tomorrow (not a threat!) then everything would continue on its present path to “net zero” because that’s where the money is...for those in the “know.”
Exactly why Consumer Reports was once a powerhouse until people caught on that that they were really a Ralph Nader, left-wing propaganda outfit.
The electric automobile, 190 years old, still not ready for prime time.
Every time you put your hands on the keyboard Trump loses votes, so he will probably lose.
All of the wealthy elites will ALWAYS drive or ride in gasoline or diesel powered vehicles.
They will never have to suffer the shortcomings of inferior vehicles available to the peasants.
Tire wear is because the contact patch is small to reduce rolling and frontal area air resistance. IF the electricity is guilt free, electric cars should be using taller and wider wheel tire combos. So once 300 miles range with 30 min charging is hit dialing it back for better wear dynamics is a simple challenge.
Cybertruck 285/65/R20 are very close to jeep tires. In a road going version are good for 40,000 miles on a 3.5 ton load. Most tesla enthiasts would love to mount a wider tire to any EV and give away 3 dollars per 100 miles in lue of tires that go off in 10,000 miles.
“but experts suggest they’re just teething issues”
In other wors people that buy electric autos are getting bit on their ass.
Can’t be - we all learned that the more problems a product causes, the more we know it’s working....
Across the street neighbor bought a brand new Tesla last week.
On Monday, it was hauled away on a flat bed truck.
EASY SOLUTION - Biden’s people take over the Editorial Board of Consumer Reports.
“Doesn’t matter. The dems have determined that you ‘want’ an EV. It’s just a matter of convincing you.”
No need to convince people when you have court rulings allowing rule by decree (ending gasoline cars, in this case).
Good, luck finding mechanics to work on em too.
“Thank God Biden will be gone by 2032, along with his rotten tribe of grifters”
Do you know something about Russia’s and/or China’s plans regarding DC, that I don’t know? Otherwise the Fascists will still be in DC, likely with even less opposition.
And that you want to eat bugs, and soy, and that you want to freeze in the winter and sweltering in the summer, and that you want to pay through the nose for basic items like food and gas, and thst you want to throw your gas streamers, lawnmowers etc in the dump and use electric ones instead
Etc etc etc
“Further proving that EV consumers are boobs.”
No one buys an EV to actually DRIVE IT - they buy it to have something to talk about at social gatherings and to hold their noses up at others. Whether the EV is actually driveable makes no difference to them, as they always have alternate cars.
What makes the above obvious is that the small portion of the country that ‘needs’ and EV for the above reasons now has theirs, and thus very few normal people are now buying them.
So eone posted info about a techno.oy where the electric car recharges itself while running- no need for gas or home charging. THAT would be an improvement that folks could,e behind BUT it likely will never happen as the gov and states can’t collect $$ for charging unless they come up with some cockeyEd new tax
“Sorry I figured you for an anti-Trumper. Do I have that wrong?”
LOL, he was referring to the Clinton/Biden bunch, it could be applied to a lot of Republicans too.
“Why is someone at a testing reporting agency making excuses in amelioration of the affect of an aspect of his report. Doesn’t sound very professional to me.”
Likely because he doesn’t want a contract put on his head, as Leftists play HARDBALL.
It’s a new technology. And really anybody that remembers 70s cars would probably still see them as pretty reliable. The age of family vacations where the fam is driving to Tampa, or until the car breaks down.
