Tired of being on platforms and long for days when we all had web sites and pages.

Is there a way to have communication via personal websites. I miss being able to visit the many sites available when the web young and people were interesting.

I remember the rings. However is there a way to have a bit more functionality and be able to communicate via sites without cookie cutters platforms?

Here is an example of their URL address system.

Lagrange:

And for Ubuntu/Mint Linux users it is in the repository just a click away.

This might want a Tech Ping.

Individual vanity personal websites are no longer in vogue because people are lazy. It takes work and dedication to keep up a personal site.

Social media sites are suited to laziness. Which makes them addictive.

Is there any security advantage to Gemini?

“Is there any security advantage to Gemini?”

Yes it is peer to peer end to end encrypted using TLS/SSL certificates. Unlike other P2P networks there are no peer network nodes to go through between you and the personal server on the other end, it is encrypted and goes directly from one machine to the machine on the other end. It goes from your client IP connection directly to the website server connection on the other end. There are no other peer node “hops” going through the machines of others or central servers to get to the other end. Only what carrier infrastructure it takes to get from point A to point B.

When you first get on the network you will have to go get an identity. You supply a username you want, just like here, and tell it how long you want this certificate to be viable and it will issue you a self signed certificate that identifies you to all the website servers in there. You can also get a new certificate whenever you like. The servers protect themselves by asking if you would like to share your certificate in order to view it. So no one without a certificate can access it.

Now keep in mind it is it’s own internet network of it’s own. When using the client/browser you are only going to get websites in the Gemini network because it is not going through the HTTP/WWW protocol. And only when the websites are online. All this we are using on the normal net is not there. It is a world of its own. But the websites are self hosted and extremely basic and simple written in text just like the days when the internet began. The pages are only a few Kb in size. And there are no hidden cookies, tracking scripts, spyware, or adware on the sites.

So as for security it is highly encrypted, uses a direct TLS/SSL connection between point A and point B, it cannot be tapped and monitored between point A and point B, and there is no unsecure garbage on the websites. If there is no direct connection and proper certificate connection then it won’t work. The servers will not allow the connection.

Honestly, it would be a perfect base for a private organization network. It is open source and free. Can be ported to a different mutual unique port. And the URL address system can be changed to a unique address of your own. This is what I am working on now. I would like to use the software to build an off grid private community network aside from the Gemini network.

But Gemini is pretty cool and worth checking out. There are a lot of cool little websites in there already. And they have directories and search engines for the network. As privacy intrusion and commercialization increases, this protocol will be of great use pretty soon to go underground and off the grid. We are about ready too need it now.

Right now there are not a whole lot of regulars on there because it is new and growing. But they are cool and friendly. In fact, you can talk to and ask questions of the very developers of Gemini and Lagrange themselves personally. They are actively working on it all the time to improve things and add features.

I really am bored with the platforms. Fb all.

I am bored with the content and resent needing them to obtain local information like town meetings

So I am far from being the only one.

That is good to hear. I am shielded from most net ads with brave and ghostery. I seem to be the only person who eschews the apps and goes to web sites only.

however the sheer inane ness of the net platforms is disheartening.

This might be the answer...albeit I am not technically able.

Unlike with Wordpress and blogspot one could easily cross over to others and comment on their work. My own pieces were improved by that and I helped out some foreigners with English usage and grammar.

I’m glad people are posting these deep thought vanities.
I had thought about it myself the last couple of months.

If people are going to waste space I would rather look at this than the ukraine threads.
