This grocery chain is doing away with self-checkout — the reason why might surprise you

Customers of popular British grocery chain Booths found out this week that the company is scrapping self-checkout lanes, just six years after rolling them out in their 28 tony stores, mostly located in the north of England.

The decision goes against a decades-long trend, where human beings are increasingly becoming a rarity at the front of supermarkets and other big box retailers — a shift most industry watchers agree is unstoppable.

“We’re not great fans of self-checkouts,” Booths managing director Nigel Murray told U.K. trade publication The Grocer. “We pride ourselves on great customer service and you can’t do that through a robot.” The do-it-yourself approach first seemed like an appealing way of managing labor costs and increasing efficiency, Murray said. But he also noted that the technology

“...staffed with first class assistants...”

Nothing wrong about cute checkout clerks.

WalMart and Staters works fine for me. No chattie cashier and lonely shopper taking up time, no waiting for the manager to approve checks, never a line, 12 machines available when there were usually 2-3 checkers.

I was at Lowe's last night to make a small purchase. There were no live cashiers. The self-checkout had four positions and one attendant. All four were occupied by people who couldn't figure out how to use them. Instead of facilitating faster throughput, I was trapped waiting on inept shoppers who accessed the checkout terminal ahead of me. Eventually one spot opened and I processed my purchase in under a minute to scan, pay and clear the spot.

Snicker... They need an excuse to get rid of self checkout. They certainly don’t want to admit to the real reason. That would be racist!

“I was trapped waiting on inept shoppers who accessed the checkout terminal ahead of me.”

I feel your pain. I’m amazed at how stupid people really are. The self check out is nothing new but I always seem to get stuck behind the retards that don’t know hiw to use them.

liberals hate it because they think it takes away jobs
we hate it because “why would i, i don’t work here, give me a discount.”

I did a self checkout the other day when there was an open register. Took me longer because you have to scan one thing at a time and type in “bananas” etc. Sometimes I had to look for the bar code on one of six sides of an item, when the professional cashier has seen that item 100 times. I would have gotten through quicker with a human cashier. Live and learn.

I was at supermarket a while back, a woman with small kids had a credit card, but COULD NOT figure out how to swipe it. The cashier had to walk around and do it for her.

I seek a live cashier when I have complex items including coupons and special markdowns. Fast with a competent cashier. Painful and error prone on a self-check.

Our Walmart supercenter has turned EVERY checkout isle into self check out, at BOTH ENDS of checkout isles there are another 10 stations to check out BOTH end stations have a cash register so the clerk can scan your alcohol, you can NOT take alcohol through self checkout a live person must scan alcohol!!

Why ATM? Isn’t that a risky way to pay at a gas station?

Save you some time:

“We believe colleagues serving customers delivers a better customer experience and therefore we have taken the decision to remove self-checkouts in the majority of our stores,” the spokesperson said.

I won't use self-checkout at all, because they don't offer me a discount for doing their work for then.

Local Walmart has about 15 self stations while manning only about 2 or 3 stations. It’s the worst. Loooooong lines. People buying a cart full of groceries go through the self line causing issues. Some dont have scales to buy produce. Some dont take cash. Some scan your grapes twice and throw a red flag that requires manual intervention from the supervisor who might get to you in 5 minutes if you’re lucky. Wait times increase and tempers increased. Sucks all the way around, welcome to the future.

But he also noted that the technology could be finicky, detracting from the shopping experience.

Except for Aldi, I am better and faster than any cashier that has checked out my items in the past 10 years.

And instead of standing in line at one of the four open manned registers, I can briskly move through an area of 14 self checkouts even on a busy shopping day.

And Giant Eagle's Scan Pay and Go is better yet. Instead of using your phone (like Meijer), you can grab one of their scanner guns on your way in and scan stuff into the cart. Then a simple click of the trigger at the register and you're ready to pay.

I can see this being a potential shoplifting issue for retailers. And maybe consumers would worry or complain about higher prices because of it. But I don't understand why shoppers would insist on getting checked out by a cashier for some sort of "shopping experience".

All I want to do is get the heck out and get the heck going. Self-checkout is a great solution.

I had a similar experience. I was on my way to the door when I realized I hadn't paid. So I ran back. Some nice lady didn't realize that the register didn't reset and she'd already scanned a few flowers through.

So I apologized and bought her the flowers.

Who says chivalry is dead?
