Intestinal bacteria metabolite found to promote capture of antigens by dendritic cells (Soluble fiber helps the immune system)

Dendritic cells play a key role in the mammalian immune system. These cells are present throughout the human body and are known to capture foreign bodies, or antigens, using extendable "arms" called dendrites. Once captured, dendritic cells present these substances to immune T cells, thereby initiating an immune response.

Dendritic cells are responsive to their environment. For instance, dendritic cells in the intestine's mucosa (inner layer) capture harmful bacteria by extending their dendrites through the epithelium (outermost layer) and into the intestinal lumen (inner space).

Researchers found short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) produced by intestinal bacteria are responsible for initiating the extension of dendrites into the intestinal lumen by dendritic cells.

SCFAs are a group of fatty acids with six or fewer carbon atoms, found in high concentrations in the intestine. The research team found that SCFAs such as acetic, propionic, butyric and valeric acids induce dendrite elongation by inhibiting an enzyme called histone deacetylase.

Inhibition of histone deacetylase leads to the reorganization of the actin cytoskeleton of dendritic cells, inducing morphological changes. The team examined the effects of SCFAs on a dendritic cell line (DC2.4 cells) and mouse bone marrow-derived dendritic cells (BMDCs).

"Ours is the first study to demonstrate that SCFAs induce dendrite elongation by inhibiting histone deacetylase. Moreover, dendritic cells activated by SCFAs exhibited more stronger immune responses, due to increased pathogen uptake," explains Dr. Furuta.

Upon conducting further analyses, the team found that treating dendritic cells with valeric acid led to an increase in the uptake of soluble proteins, insoluble beads, and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. In contrast, the treatment of BMDCs with valeric acid enhanced their antigen presentation ability.

It was also observed that SCAFs activated dendrite elongation by stimulating a signaling pathway involved in reorganization of the actin cytoskeleton—forces responsible for cell movement and cell morphology.

The specific soluble fiber/prebiotic fiber that would help make valeric acid is from Fructooligosaccharides (FOS).

You can get this from the following foods, according to Wikipedia:

“FOS is extracted from the blue agave plant as well as fruits and vegetables such as bananas, onions, chicory root, garlic, asparagus, jícama, and leeks. Some grains and cereals, such as wheat and barley, also contain FOS. The Jerusalem artichoke and its relative yacón together with the blue agave plant have been found to have the highest concentrations of FOS of cultured plants.”

You can also buy it as a supplement, and may find it in some probiotic formulas and yogurts.

Oh, my, all of the antivaxxers out there better get on some strong antibiotics quickly and get rid of those gut bacteria ASAP.

After all, according to antivax rhetoric, initiating an immune response is one of the most dangerous things that your body can do. This must be avoided at all cost.

Seriously speaking, however, this seems like a mechanism for targeting immune responses to the gastrointestinal tract. I’m not certain that the gut bacteria secretions would have an effect on dendritic cell function elsewhere in the body.

Artichoke hearts are a good source of fiber.

Antibiotics destroy the good bacteria in the gut and that weakens the immune system. But, whatever.

Oh, my, all of the antivaxxers out there…

I’m vaccinated up one side and down the other. I grew up as a Navy brat and we tended to be human pincushions, especially prior to and during overseas deployments.

Then as an adult, I have traveled to, worked and lived in some, shall we say, interesting places. So I am quite vaccinated.

But I haven’t ever taken the FauciPfizerModerna virtue injection.

Fauci was not involved in the R&D and clinical trials that led to the Covid vaccines that are now available. They were tested on tens of thousands of people, and by now, have been administered to billions of people. Over 81% of the US population has received at least one dose of Covid vaccine. Their safety profile is comparable to that of any other vaccine.

Without the efforts of professional antivaxxers to scare people with lies and half-truths, no one would question the safety of vaccines. The goal of professional antivaxxers is, and always has been, to increase the numbers of people dying from infectious disease.

Professional antivaxxers deliberately targeted conservatives. And, as a result of too many conservatives believing the propaganda, Republicans are about 7% more likely to die from Covid than Democrats.

Excess Death Rates for Republican and Democratic Registered Voters in Florida and Ohio During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

When a bunch of radical leftists are hitting the conservative talk shows to tell conservatives how dangerous the Covid vaccines are, it would be wise to be skeptical and question their motives. When have leftists ever cared about conservatives? They openly talk about getting rid of us. And rank-and-file liberals are happy that there are fewer Republican voters now.

I'm a scientist. One of my areas of expertise was vaccines development. I understand the science of vaccines and I have read the safety data provided to the FDA. I have, so far, received five Covid vaccines (two primary series, two boosters, and one updated bivalent booster). I plan to take the newest updated vaccine in a week or so.

If scientists and infectious disease physicians who fully understand everything about the Covid vaccine have no problem with taking it, doesn't that tell you something?

I try to be as clear as possible and use language that ordinary people understand.

vivenne: Antibiotics destroy the good bacteria in the gut and that weakens the immune system. But, whatever.

Yes, that was my point exactly.

Whether you realize it or not, the entire antivax narrative is based on the premise that immune system activation is the most dangerous process that can happen in your body.

Vaccines use parts of pathogens to provoke immune responses. Vaccines themselves don't do anything. Only the immune system does anything after vaccination.

So, if something like gut bacteria cause the immune system to activate and the antivaxxers are being truthful when they tell you that immune activation is dangerous, don't you want to get rid of those bacteria and stop that dangerous immune system from doing anything?

Why are you trying to hijack someone's thread about intestinal microbiome and converting it into your personal soapbox on the mostly unrelated subject of covid vaccines and then using it to speak down to "the ordinary people". You should start your own thread or snark on a Covid vaccine thread.

(And by the way your "the entire antivax narrative is based on the premise that immune system activation is the most dangerous process that can happen in your body" is a laughably FALSE statement since the antivax crowd keeps saying that natural immunity is the way to go. )

Big Pharma sales of Magic Fauci Juice must be struggling.

And I found the condescending “ordinary people” comment hilarious, too. I guess the ExDemMom is extraordinary.

If I’m not mistaken, I believe I have also seen this poster refer to those of us who breathe freely as “maskless idiots.”

Thanks Tex, I agree with you! This ordinary person is happy masks are gone!
