The decline of the American mall has left just 700 still standing. Soon there may be just 150 left.

Once-bustling American malls are going bust as shoppers flock to online retailers instead of sprawling, brick-and-mortar locations.

Ten years from now, there will be approximately 150 malls left in the US, Nick Egelanian, president of retail consulting firm SiteWorks, told The Wall Street Journal.

That's down from around 2,500 locations in the 1980s and 700 today, Egelanian said.

The 80's will be remembered as the golden age of malls, jah, gag me with a spoon.

Quite bittersweet.

My local mall has been taken over by “teens”
No one goes there partly because of the constant fights and chaos

The quickest way to destroy a mall is to add a public bus stop.

I was in an upscale Texas mall a few months ago, lots and lots of people, the vast majority, aside from maybe a pretzel or burger, had bought nothing.

The only retail store cranking out paying customers was the Apple Store.

There are still bundles of stores. They’re just configured differently. Here in MA, outside “malls” are sprouting up. They just aren’t called “malls.”

Which part of Texas was this ‘upscale mall’ in....that had lots of people?

Just curious.

The newly discovered phenomenon of “mall deserts” is surely racist.

Thats because most people in the country were white and civil, then. Malls were safe and not being robbed by “yout” flash mobs and organized crime rackets.

Look back at 80s photos of crowds in malls. Mostly white. Civil crowds. There to shop. Have fun at arcades. My mall I first grew up in back then had a massive skating rink in its major intersection.

Yes that one big one.

The other big one is having a movie theater in the mall.

No worries, fed and state monies will be stolen from taxpayers and the rest piled on the debt as hundreds of these malls will be converted to a place to house a few million illegals. Then with gummit cash they can get food items, clothing, charge their obama phones and get their debit card recharged every month while they breed like rabbits to get anchor babies. We’ll pay for that too.

Our local mall has been there for almost 50 years, and always had a bus stop.

Things were always pretty good until the last 10 years or so.

I used to like going to malls, but most of the best ones here have closed. I don’t go to any, anymore.

The entire premise of enclosed shopping malls was based on a set of shared cultural norms, that have largely ceased to exist.

Fun fact. There are no Apple stores in the Eastern District of Texas (which includes the wealthy northern suburban counties of Dallas.) From Denton (north of Fort Worth) to the Eastern suburbs of Houston on the Gulf coast, no Apple stores.

Yep. Happened to best mall in KCMO. Bannister mall. All the girls would be dropped off there. We'd be let loose from the local military academy/boarding school and we'd haul ass down to Bannister mall. All types of fun and mischief.

One Friday we showed up (about a month after bus route added from KCMO) and the place was full of people who annoy you. No girls. Smart parents I guess would never drop off their daughters. Mall closed in less than 5 years I think. Damn shame that the youts/teens/amish absolutely ruined it.

The "Towne Centre" that's about as far from the center of town as they can build it.

Never been a fan of malls even as a child. Just like to go into a store, get what I need and get out. If I need to walk somewhere there is always a park or my own neighborhood.
