Common diabetes drug could treat gum disease and help with healthy aging, study claims (Metformin)

A new method of controlling inflammation and sugar levels for oral and systemic disease prevention using a common diabetes drug has been discovered by a team of researchers.

A team of researchers have found new ways of stopping periodontal (gum) disease and potentially reducing the incidence of diabetes and obesity. This new approach focuses on controlling inflammation and sugar levels in both the mouth and body with a common type 2 diabetes drug, Metformin.

The only treatment strategy currently available to tackle gum disease is to deep clean the teeth to rid the mouth of bacteria, as well as prescribing antibiotics. But this treatment does not protect against the continuation and development of systemic associated diseases, such as diabetes and obesity.

Metformin, a pharmaceutical agent capable of modulating sugar metabolism, is a drug commonly used for the management of diabetes, but it is not typically used in dentistry. The researchers found that Metformin led to significant prevention of bone-loss during induced periodontal disease and age-related bone-loss in vivo (in living mice). The research team tested the use of this drug in patients with gum disease without diabetes. The trial showed improved clinical outcomes in the gum disease treatment, and control of sugar levels and inflammation in the mouth and body, even in high levels of bacteria.

The use of this new method of gum disease prevention would also help control weight gain and sugar levels, potentially proving to be a new solution to prevent systemic and oral disease in one.

"Metformin is readily available around the world and is cheap, therefore allowing the drug to be used as a preventive medicine for oral and systemic diseases that could be adopted on a global scale. This would help many to age healthier—all starting from taking care of their mouths."

Metformin helped with the body’s sugar handling, which is what it does with diabetics.

I would think people with bleeding gums have a situation made worse by their blood sugar and insulin levels, yet, they are still not bad enough to ve called Type 2 diabetics.

I would look at this as a great opportunity, but not likely any better an opportunity than getting yourself healthy by working off your calories and eating fewer carbs.

Yeah, it isn’t new news. I did a trial with it about five years ago and couldn’t tolerate even 250 mg. And among diabetics it has a pretty high failure rate due to adverse effects.

The best way for type 2 diabetics to reduce their blood sugar is to eat low carb. It certainly worked for me, brought my A1C down from 6.8 to 5.4 just by changing my diet. Hi blood sugar levels destroy everything in your body including your teeth.

I’ve heard similar stories. My wife, however, is a type 2 diabetic and does very well on metformin (1000mg daily).

That’s too bad given it’s inexpensive. Seems to work my family

“That’s too bad given it’s inexpensive.”

The expense is not the problem with misusing diabetic drugs. I use a product called Ozempic in addition to two types of insulin. When some idiot determined that Ozempic was great for weight loss, it is now extremely difficult to find it for diabetic use which is what it was invented for.

“Ozempic, known generically as semaglutide, was approved in 2017 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in adults with type 2 diabetes.

“Ozempic is a weekly injection that helps lower blood sugar by helping the pancreas make more insulin. It is not approved for weight loss, but some physicians prescribe it to be used for weight loss.”

https://health.ucdavis.edu/blog/cultivating-health/ozempic-for-weight-loss-does-it-work-and-what-do-experts-recommend/2023/07#:~:text=What%20is%20Ozempic%3F,the%20pancreas%20make%20more%20insulin.

So when the word gets around that metformin can be used to control inflammation and sugar levels for oral and systemic disease prevention, it will fly off the shelves and money won’t be an issue...finding it will. And then those who need it for diabetes 2 will be harmed and ultimately die from sugar damage and their escalated symptoms.

Can you document the failure rate?

I've been using it for 45 years. Started with 250 mgs/day in late 1970s and was up to 4 500 mgs per day--never a sign of a problem.

Backed off to 3 500s/day since 2000 mgs is usual daily limit according to my MD.

Sorry to hear you had a problem with it--metformin is a truly remarkable medicine.

One 24-36 hour fast per week plus brushing your teeth and gums twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste might work, too.

When I was first diagnosed with type 2 the doc put me on Metformin. I took it for just a few days and for those few days, I lived in the bathroom. My wife had the same experience with Metformin.

Doc said it was a common occurrence and put us on insulin.

Metformin is GREAT! I have zero metabolic issues, no pre-Diabetes/Diabetes. I began taking metformin experimentally about 10 years ago when I was in my late 50s. I have taken as much as 1500 mg per day, but now typically 1000 mg in the evening. I started very slow with 250 mg a day and worked up. If you do a search for metformin study, you begin to see many different research studies with this product. Recently it seems to be found to prevent hospitalization for people who had covid. There are many different cancers that it seems to be likely to reduce the development of. Has potential benefits for the eyes as far as macular degeneration and on and on. Do your own searches. A lot of the.com execs are taking metformin as a potential extender of healthy older years and potentially an extended lifespan. I think there’s some bigger stuff out there that can do more but for now metformin is a good choice for many people.

That’s because celebrities with eating disorders discovered it.

Metformin is an excellent drug, but the natural substance curcumin does the same thing for blood sugar, and much more.

If you could only take it without having to expect when you need to take a half hour bathroom break. I have to eat like a big bowl of chile or atleast something big enough to “soak up” all the Metformin, which quickly passes the definition of “portion control’. I gotta tell you. The list of beneficial things that this drug does is amazing and I have felt many myself. You just gotta choke those horse pills down and get on with it!

I started taking metformin recently as I found about 50% blockage by plaque of my left cartotid artery. I’ve got a gun pointed at my head.

So I’ve dropped 10 pounds. I’ll drop 20 more pounds byo of low carbs and every other day limiting myself to about 500 calories.

Then I started taking three drugs to lower inflammation and stabilize plaque. The first is metformin, the second is colchisine and the third is esitimbe. (My spellings may not be correct.) Occasionally I’ll take ramapril. Its a blood pressure medicine that has some anti inflammatory side effect. I don’t take it often because I don’t any blood pressure problems. I only take the metformin on days when I have full meals or about every other day. My blood sugar levels are already fairly low at 91.

As well I’ve upped my k2 300mcg @day and my vitamin d to 20k mcg. Plus I’ve added a couple of herbals that are said to have anti inflammatory properties.

I’m hoping these will stabilize and even shrink the plaque.

“That’s because celebrities with eating disorders discovered it.”

I guess when you live in a country with their personal needs based upon their failures, this type of stupidity can happen. Everything is modern, even the ability of people to replace proper diet and exercise with medication and surgery to fix a cosmetic want that is now turning into a demand that is not in the best interest of society. So it’s too easy to take from those that need it for the reason it was invented so someone can be substandard in their treatment of their peers.

I’ll bet if some study would come out and say weight loss can be achieved by cutting off their legs, there’d be a run on wheelchairs. Same theory.
