As the situation in Israel and Gaza continues to unfold, many people far from the conflict are nonetheless exposed to countless images, stories and sounds of conflict via television and radio news reports, newspaper and digital stories, and of course social media.
And this is taking a toll on all of us, including our children. The American Psychological Association released a statement this week warning that consuming violent and traumatic news can in and of itself negatively affect our mental health.
“Psychological science tells us that fear, anxiety and traumatic stress have long-term effects on health and well-being. These impacts are also being felt by people around the world who have families and friends in the region, as well as those concerned about the effects of war everywhere,” it says.
So how do we stay informed and stay connected while protecting our mental health and that of our children? This is an issue that has come up over and over in the context of a long list of events such as school shootings, mass shootings, the January 6 insurrection at the US Capitol, climate change, incidents of police brutality, the Covid-19 pandemic, the September 11 terrorist attacks and natural disasters such as hurricanes and wildfires.
CNN Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta reached out to Dr. Gail Saltz for advice on how to navigate this fine line for an upcoming episode of his podcast, “Chasing Life.” Saltz is a clinical associate professor of psychiatry at the New York Presbyterian Hospital and Weill Cornell Medical College and the host of the podcast “How Can I Help?”

1 - do not read or listen to CNN or any USA media.
2 - if you simply must have news reports - listen or read, sparsely:
- J24 Israel news website or YouTube clips
- Al Jazeera news website or YouTube
That way you get both sides of the story without USA or Euro hyperbole.
3 - Go to the park with your dog, read a book, or spend time with family
4 - Go to church and pray for the dead and for justice and peace
Practically speaking, both sides are irrevocably hell bound. My mental health is unphased.....

Really people. Maybe check in once every couple of days. But you’re not actually accomplishing anything obsessing on the news. Live your life. Eat something yummy, fornicate your spouse. Much like how nobody on their death bed said they should have spent more time at work, nobody said they should have spent more time watching the “news”.

Norad has been doing the Santa tracking every Christmas for almost 70 years, and we always see some mention of it on the TV news here. It’s for kids, and was probably especially distracting for them at a time like that.

Global conflicts: Death toll at highest in 21st century
Since the 21st century began, war has never cost humanity so much. The number of conflict deaths almost doubled in 2022 compared to the previous year. And war caused a 13% loss of global GDP, according to the Global Peace Index, released on Wednesday by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP).
The major new survey by the global think tank said that the average level of “global peacefulness” had sunk for the ninth year in a row, with conflict deaths topping the previous global peak reached in 2014 during the Syrian Civil War.
The dramatic increase in death rates was mostly driven by the war in Ukraine, where 83,000 people were killed in the past year, though the bloodiest conflict was in Ethiopia, where 100,000 people lost their lives.

A great first step would be to avoid watching CNN.
There is no such thing. At best you can find multiple sources of information about what is happening and judge for yourself what it means.
During the Nixon administration we went very high up the DefCon scale one night.
