Nursing schools are turning away thousands of applicants during a major nursing shortage. Here’s why

At a time when registered nurses are going on strike to protest staffing shortages, thousands of applicants who want to enter or advance in the profession are being turned away from nursing schools.

Nearly 78,200 qualified applications were not offered spots at nursing schools last year, according to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, which represents schools with baccalaureate and advanced degree programs.

This includes nearly 66,300 applications for entry-level bachelor’s degree programs. The number of applications turned away from baccalaureate programs has been higher in recent years than it was prior to 2019. (One person may submit applications to multiple schools.)

My sister experienced the same crap in the 1980s. She persevered and became a great nurse. She was good enough to be offered more and more work. Unfortunately, she experienced, like so many, burnout. She eventually found a great private sector job where she uses her nursing / medical experience every hour.

That’s a load of garbage.
There are plenty of good careers available with just an Associates Degree.
I have an Associates Degree, and I make close to 80K.
In fact, many employers are not hiring people with Bachelors Degrees anymore.

Might as well. I once had a VA doctor that couldnt speak English. I presently have a whole pile of doctors that I generally cant speak to and the nurses who are local dont seem to be able to understand anything related to health or to take a message properly.

Lets not even get into the blatantly intentionally miseducated crew like the nutritionists.

As long as the doctors can let it be known they are better than the nurses, it doesn’t matter what language they speak.

Degrees don’t mean crap when it comes to attained knowledge. Schools are for certificates of completion. Sure you MIGHT learn in school, but if you want to learn you don’t need school.

there are plenty of applicants to be college professors or instructors....

the ANA loves to push a crisis....

they do not represent the rank and file and their main focus is pushing for more nursing "teachers" and practitioners....they work endlessly to enable more privileges for practitioners....

the vast amount of money they raise is from the forced dues of hospital RN's....

and yet where was the ANA when nurses were forced to take the vaxx?.....

2 daughters are RNs doing fine.

One has 2 daughters and no time for advanced degrees.

The other is making double as a traveling nurse and no incentive for an advanced degree.

That number means nothing. Students apply to more colleges, simultaneously, all the time.

There are loads of barely literate nursing students in the hopper now.

The dreaded degree creep. You don’t need 4 years of college to insert catheters.

Most states and hospitals accept new nurses with associates degrees but many such nurses try to get their Bachelors within a few short years. The 2 year degree schools are also hurting for instructors.

Credential creep to make different career paths feel more important.

Nurses went to nursing schools and got diplomas then associates snd now baccalaureate.
And masters and doctorates.

Mostly a joke.

Nursing schools are run by women a d they are horrific cat fights. Have been for years.

No nurse worth he salt want anything to do with them.

Women are not good in leadership positions beyond line management

You missed my point. What we do today with an associates degree was what high school graduates did 40 years ago. I’m not saying that the AAS degree isn’t valuable.

But look around at how many kids today have a HS diploma and can barely read, let alone do basic math calculations. They need 2 additional years of remedial education just to get to where they should have been already. They didn’t EARN their high school diploma, it doesn’t have the value it once had.
