A FedEx Boeing 757 with landing gear failure crash landed, then skidded off the end of a runway late Wednesday night in Chattanooga, Tennessee, the city's fire department said in a post on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. The three pilots on board weren't hurt, the Chattanooga Regional Airport said in a statement.
First responders raced to the airport after getting reports that the plane was on its final approach, the fire department said.
Agencies at the scene along with firefighters included their department's Special Ops team, Chattanooga police and Hamilton County EMS, according to CBS Chattanooga affiliate WDEF-TV.
They were in position as the aircraft circled before making its final descent, the fire department said.
The plane came to a stop before it got to a street in the safety area, the department continued.
"There was no fire, only smoke from the engines," the department said.
"Great work by the pilot and airport personnel, as well as all responding agencies for their coordinated efforts," it added.
The airport said its main runway would be closed "until further notice."
The cause of the gear malfunction was being investigated.

They need hooks on the planes. Think of aircraft carrier landings with cables. Lay the cables on shallow ponds.

Put a tailhook on an aircraft that was not designed for arrested landings, and you'll rip the tail off if you attempt an arrested landing. That's assuming the weight/balance isn't so screwed up as to prevent flying ... This is why, for example, the US Navy doesn't use F-15s and F16s.
The F-4 "Phantom II" was originally designed as a Navy/Marine fighter, with a tailhook for arrested landings on carriers. When the USAF adopted the F-4 as well, they retained the tailhook. Were they planning to carry out arrested landings? No ... the tailhook is very heavy. Removing it would have irreparably screwed up the balance of the aircraft.
I tripped out when I saw hooks on F-16s. The guard unit switched to F-15s, but I haven’t looked close enough to see if they have hooks too. Probably do.

16s have hooks. Not for arrested Landings though. Most likely in case of break failures. The is a cable at each end of the runway overrun. So the land normally and roll out to the end and catch the cable before going into the dirt. I’ll bet most air force fighters have them.

I was watching the show MAYDAY this morning and it was the one about the DHL Airbus 300 leaving a Bagdad that was hit by a terrorscum Shoulder launched missile near the end of the left wing and killed all 3 hydraulic systems and left the wing on fire from leaking fuel tank. The Crew managed to land successfully using only throttle control. Then when they got off the plane the Fire Rescue had to lead them through a zone full of unexploded ordnance left from the battle to take the airport !!! Talk about a high stress day...
