Those F-35 stealth fighters must be even closer to invisible than I thought because the Marines lost one on Sunday and nobody can find it.
A Marine piloting the special vertical takeoff and landing version, the F-35B, suffered some kind of “mishap” and was forced to eject over South Carolina. He ejected safely. He’s fine. We can go on and laugh. The plane, however, was nowhere to be found. Weighing in at over 32,000 pounds even when it isn’t filled with jet fuel, you’d think the missing jet would be easy to find, but no.
There was genuine concern that the autopilot might have been on, meaning that there was an $80 million fighter jet gently cruising around over South Carolina with no pilot and no canopy. Sunday drivers, amirite?
So whoever runs the social media for Joint Base Charleston took to Twitter to ask for help finding the super-invisible stealth fighter.
*************
An early report from NBC noted that “The jet was left in autopilot mode so there’s a possibility it could still be airborne somewhere over South Carolina.” That was early Sunday evening. Surely, it’s run out of fuel by now. (Yes, and don’t call me Shirley.)
But no one seems to have seen or heard the thing crash.

They should just buy a replacement. As soon as they do, they’ll find the old one.
I’m going to check my backyard right now.
The plane was beamed into a mothership and is now in a galaxy far away.
So, ATC radar no work? Plane grabbed by an alien ship’s tractor beam? Chicoms remote controlling it to land safely in Beijing? Any reports of loud crashes, black smoke, and the smell of fuel burning? Satellite imagery not able to locate it?
Try Google earth.
Flying in zombie mode.
There is SO MUCH phone-home technology on these things that it is hard for me to believe it vanished. Even at the bottom of the ocean or a deep lake something would be pinging.
The thing could have landed itself by now and is just sitting on some runway somewhere muttering “I’m here. Nobody sees me. Why doesn’t someone see me?”
Why did the pilot pop out when the plane was still flying? I must be missing something.
Dunno - leave a hundred million plane to go on in zombie mode for what reason?
“... where it was intercepted by ...”
Makes you wonder if there were radars or something that would be tracking the plane, or if interceptors were sent toward it. Perhaps if there were any of this it would be kept secret.
Already on a boat to Iran along with 6 billion dollars and a few Iranian spies?
Unreal!!
Well....not with this evil regime. 😩
I was stationed at Soesterberg when that happened and I was sitting on the other side of the berm from the alert facility. I remember the klaxon going off and thinking it was another exercise. The pilots scrambled, engine start and immediate take off. Everyone knew there was trouble brewing, we just didn’t find out until later at the club. Many drinks had by all...nice shoot down of a Soviet jet in the Cold War!
