It really is publicly insulting, humiliating, and demeaning and probably discriminatory for elderly citizens to have to go through this charade at the hands of witless cashiers (young enough to be their grandchildren) whenever a bottle or two of wine is included with groceries. Where's the lawyer who would try this case?
Demanding proof of age from everyone removes discretion from the process and protects the retailer from legal trouble. You’ll never win an “age discrimination” case if elderly people are treated like everyone else.
Did anyone think that Walmart choose to ID all buyers of alcohol so no one can sue for age discrimination.

This has nothing to do with being “thin-skinned” and having to be told I should shop elsewhere. This is the business lobby putting the responsibility for statutory compliance onto the backs of the consumers, leaving the seller without any responsibility whatsoever to perform their duties with care. And to make them immune to lawsuits. Too many consumers don’t realize the danger when a law is too broad in scope or enforcement, causing us to act as though the problem is the one whom it is being used against. I have seen many Hispanic women and men purchasing beer in the checkout line at Walmart without ever being asked to show identification. Yet I am asked to show my drivers license all of the time. This is age harassment because only some people are being targeted for the requirement to identify themselves, not everyone, not by any means. No company is that perfect.
I always show my ID as well as telling them my real ID is the wrinkles on my brow along with the gray hair on my head which was earned through a lot of blood, sweat and tears.
RE: Lawyer....their (WM) lawyer (and liability insurance co.) is telling them to ID check everyone per state rules. You probably won’t get any “lawyer/case” takers. Conversely, younger people could get a lawyer and sue for “age discrimination” if WM stopped ID’ing you. Law problem, not a WM problem.
OC, is in Cape May County. Its gone R for some time. Matter of fact about 3 or 4 counties n South Jersey that vote R. Its the cities that do us in.

I went to a large chain liquor store here in Texas, they insisted on checking my ID...oh well, their competitor, who still is willing to let someone with gray hair get a pass, now gets ALL of my business.
I think employers force them to do it.
Last time this happened to me I asked the cashier if there was a point in which one is too old to drink alcohol?
Well, if you go to TN your are gonna get carded.
I witnessed an old immigrant just outside of Knoxville 20 years ago.
He tried to buy beer for the group outside. He did not have an ID.
No sale.
He was probably 65 or so. The younger outside were mid-20’s.
I’m sure that group since moved on to NC or VA.
It’s also against the law. Nothing to do with discrimination.
I was at BevMo today - not sure if they are nationwide - to get some items for the Labor Day weekend. They not only wanted to see my ID, they scanned it into their computer!
I asked why they did that. He said “store policy”. I know it’s not a state policy. It is something they did during pandemic when we had alcohol delivered but never had a store actually scan my ID. Very creepy.
So as for invasion of privacy at WalMart (which I agree, and agree it’s stupid when it’s obvious) but why are they SCANNING the ID cards into their computer? Collecting data like this may also be against state law (which is why you get to “opt out” of tracking cookies when you visit a website).

From what I’ve heard, in Japan all they do is have you self-verify that you’re at least 19 or whatever the drinking age is there. But given the fact that Japan’s justice system is still functional (regardless of whether you’re Japanese, or whether you’re Japanese [not much else there]), you had best be HONEST.

If it happens to me I point to my bald head and say “that is my proof of age”.
The cashier and the people behind me in line all crack up laughing.
In MI, they scan your ID at 7-11s to buy beer. I stopped buying from them completely!!

It’s one thing to be carded just to comply with state law.
It’s quite another to have your ID scanned and placed on file for tracking purposes.
I wonder if marijuana dispensaries also record you purchases to the state?
