Meet the 82-YEAR-OLD man who has been dwelling in an isolated off-grid cabin in the forest for 46 YEARS - relying on wood fires for heat and a homemade waterwheel for electricity on 'dark winter nights'

A man has revealed how he has lived off grid for 46 years in an isolated cabin in the woods, where he uses a homemade waterwheel to power his gadgets.

Simply referred to as 'Al,' the 82-year-old outdoorsman from the state of Washington stars in a short film made by YouTuber DiegoTriesHard.

In the documentary, he shows viewers the eco-friendly home he has created on a 40-acre plot.

He starts off explaining how his waterwheel works and how he first started generating his own power using the current system on December 13, 1996, with the date etched into his wheel house.

While Al started out with a water wheel as his main power source, he has since purchased three solar panels which do the majority of the work.

Now he says: 'Mostly it's solar power.

'The waterwheel's for dark winter nights, I use it for two, three hours maybe.'

In terms of energy consumption, the forest dweller says his usage is 'very low.'

At breakfast he will generally have his laptop on while listening to the radio 'and then I don't use anything until probably six at night.'

In the evenings, he says he likes to put on his laptop to watch the news and he will use a few lights. If there is an outage, there is a generator in a shed, but it is rarely used.

To heat his house and sauna, which he constructed in an outbuilding, Al says he has an abundance of wood on the doorstep, which he doesn't have to pay for.

His property is mainly surrounded by mature elder trees, but there are cedars and other species amid the mix.

My first thought too, but I guess at 82 and keeping up on the news, he feels he’s passing on information needed for the future.

The fact that this is happening in my state of Washington is amazing to me. Granted, I know there’s tons of places in the Cascades were there isn’t another person around for 30 miles.

I can just imagine Governor Inslee watching this video and exclaiming “How in the hell can that happen in MY state???”. And then he’ll sic AG Bob ‘Fergy’ Ferguson (butt-buddy and ideological twin to Inslee who will probably be the next governor of the state) to send in the authorities because apparently he is a conservative who doesn’t want the government interfering in his personal life

He seems to have everything he needs, and looks like a very healthy capable 82 year old as well. Of course his companionship seems to be lacking. Not a life for everyone, but it seems to work for him. At least I imagine it’s a stress free life in many ways.

Ironically, he had made a career in county law enforcement. I won’t mention his name or even the county, because he was rather well-known (notorious?) back in the day.

Dick Proenneke beat him to it by 30 years. Alone in the Wilderness is an amazing documentary.

This thread is the perfect example of why FR is dying. It’s post after post of negative bullshit, completely ruining a positive story. Who the hell wants to read hundreds of posts daily from cynical old goats who want to see the world burn?

The good thing is they didn’t specify where he lived (somewhere near St Helens). There are so many old logging roads up there one would have very difficult time finding his cabin. You could be 200 yards from it and not realize it in the woods. So hopefully he is safe.

Does he pull his own teeth with pliers ?

String on the doorknob is the acceptable method.

Nobody will read, nobody that does read that matters will believe or care but; this is one man living a sparse but satisfying life, for him, in an ideal location for what he is doing. In a nation of 350,000,000 people it would take 21.8 million square miles for each of us to have his own little bit of self-sustaining solitude. In the whole of the lower 48 states there are only 3.1 million square miles in total; seven times less than what is needed of these ideal locations of which only a very few exist since more than half of our land mass is some form of desert or prairie.

Nothing was said about how he feeds himself so that is extra done from somewhere.

Utopia does not exist. If it does, there is not enough of it to go around.

Peddle the BS somewhere else.

Anyone who thinks that renewable or sustainable is sustainable or reliable is FOS and a lame brain.

I can’t completely agree with that. I’ll just bet that he hasn’t been vaxxed against the dreaded deadly Covid bioweapon. It takes another bioweapon to fight another one and may the best one win. Of course the host may not survive but they would died harder if they weren’t vaxxed.
