PORTLAND, Ore — The triple-digit heat sent shoppers hunting for air conditioners in the Portland-metro area Tuesday.
“It's hot," said Richard Porter, who bought an air conditioner. "I need some air conditioning."
"Real hot," said Jamie Minkus, who also bought an air conditioner. "I was standing in my bedroom last night. I'm not doing anything but, just, like sweating. And then I tried to sleep, and there was just like it was sleepless, is insufferable. I have an older home, so I just need like a portable AC to kind of just help me through to the sleep."
"Oh, last night was terrible," said Frederick Pittman, buying parts to fix an air conditioner. "Our air conditioning went out. So what we did was we had ice bags -- just kind of passing them around just to stay cool."
“I drove to the closest Walmart that I can find, which was in Happy Valley," Porter said. "And they had, they had like one air conditioner, and that was really expensive. That wasn't in my budget. So I called around to Home Depot, and they suggested me another Home Depot, and I called them, and they didn't have any stock."

It is summer, after all.
Yeah, I’m hoping Mount Hood blows up too.
Winter plan for summer in the summer plan for winter it’s the normal way of thinking.
Bonus round: Always plan for an emergency.
I remember hot spells in Portland most summers in the 1960s when the high temperatures were over 100 for several days in a row. Nobody I knew had A/C in their homes, and few businesses were air-conditioned either. People just sat in the shade if it was really hot, or ran electric fans, or hung out in the basement, and then it cooled down at night. It wasn’t that big a deal before we knew about global warming.
Why would you buy an AC to use for a couple days? Get a wet wash cloth. Take a cold shower.
At least they’re not out setting fires this year.
Trying to work up a tear for them. Now they know how us who live in the South slept before we had air conditioning. We just crawled in bed and let the sweat roll off of us.
My wife, as a child in Plano TX told how their parents took a bed out in the yard, put the kids to bed in it and wet down the sheets to keep them cool.
When I was a kid we lived on the High Plains. Hotter than he!! in the day and freezing cold at night. Then dad got a wild hair and decided to move us to the Ozarks to “live off the land.” The Ozarks ate him up!
It’s orygone. They decriminalized the hard stuff. Forget the weed. It’s Libertarian Blue Smack.
Amazon has next day delivery. Just saying....
I’m in Seattle and finally broke down about 10 years ago to buy a portable AC. This year we used it for a couple of hot days in June, and for a few days in August. We’ll turn it on again around 5pm and off by midnight and then open up the windows. It is nice to have the living room cool while we are in there. It was 97 yesterday, 94 today.
Most summers it gets cool by 6 am so we leave the windows upon all night, close them in the morning and pull the shades on the south side during the day and the house stays comfortable all day.
When my sister & BIL moved to Portland after living in Nebraska and Maryland, my sister told their realtor they would only look at houses with central air. The agent kept telling them A/C was only good for a handful of days per year. Told the agent they didn’t care. After they bought the house, their friends would ask to come over on hot days.
Precisely why stores don't overstock the item. Pretty common for lowlifes to buy an air
conditioner during a hot spell, an d then return it to the store when the hot spell is over.
Well.
106* on the 13th
113* on the 14th
109* on the 15th
111* today.
My thermo might be off a little and I’m 15 miles west of downtown closer to the fields. But yea, it’s friggin HOT.
It was still over 100* at 730pm on the 14th. Poor dog hasn’t been out for more than a few minutes in days.
Okay - I just went to a weather site and that’s what they had but thanks! They’re really hot there. We suffered through a 97 day (unofficial) but tomorrow it’s supposed to drop to around 85; time to break out the winter coats. LOL
Just got back home. Says 109* now. Where you at?
No excuses then. It’s
