Large study suggests people with low levels of vitamin K have less healthy lungs
Medical Xpress / European Respiratory Society / ERJ Open Research ^ | Aug. 9, 2023 | Torkil Jespersen et al

People with low levels of vitamin K in their blood are more likely to have poor lung function and to say they suffer with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and wheezing, according to a study.

Vitamin K is found in leafy green vegetables, vegetable oils and cereal grains. It plays a role in blood clotting.

Researchers say their new findings do not alter current advice on vitamin K intake, but they do support further research to see if some people could benefit from taking vitamin K supplements.

The study involved a group of 4,092 people aged between 24 and 77 years living in Copenhagen.

Study participants took part in lung function testing, called spirometry, gave blood samples and answered questionnaires on their health and lifestyle. The blood tests included a marker of low levels of vitamin K in the body called dp-ucMGP. Spirometry measures the amount of air a person can breathe out in one second (forced expiratory volume or FEV1) and the total volume of air they can breathe in one forced breath (forced vital capacity or FVC).

The researchers found that people with markers of low levels of vitamin K had lower FEV1 and lower FVC on average. People with lower levels of vitamin K were also more likely to say they had COPD, asthma or wheezing.

Researcher, Dr. Torkil Jespersen said, "We already know that vitamin K has an important role in the blood and research is beginning to show that it's also important in heart and bone health, but there's been very little research looking at vitamin K and the lungs. To our knowledge, this is the first study on vitamin K and lung function in a large general population. Our results suggest that vitamin K could play a part in keeping our lungs healthy."

Vitamin K is available in multiple forms across many foods but is best found in Japanese natto, where it’s part of the slimy portion. The form in that is K2-MK7, which lasts much longer in the body than the other forms, K and K2-MK4.

We just take a combo form of the three. Natto is okay, but hard to find and higher in carbs, being fermented soybeans.

I read an article about natto & the photos almost made me gag! It seems to be a very polarizing food.

Generally, if you did eat a salad at least 3 times a week, you probably are getting enough Vit K. For a guy, if you were doing the vitamin pill routine....120 mcg is your limit. Women? 90 mcg.

There’s supposed to be some reports to say Vit K improves memory in older adults.

I have an artificial heart valve and take warfarin for the last 33 years. Must watch my Vitamin K intake very carefully. No problems yet.

No problems here. Been on warfarin for the last 33 years and must watch my VK intake very close. Get an INR blood test every week.

Natto, being soy-based, is dangerous for people with vulnerability to thyroid illness, which includes many folks of Irish ethnicity.

When I read the list of Vitamin K foods on Wikipedia, I eat 3/4ths of the list regularly, and some daily. It’s hard to imagine anyone being deficient in K, unless they eat nothing but sweet tea and Twinkies.

Get an INR blood test every week.

Lordy -- one's veins would be totally scarred unless they can do it with the fingerstick.
