The Milwaukee Brewers are on the verge of exploring relocation options as the team looks to renovate American Family Field.

According to FrontOfficeSports, the team is seeking $448million worth of upgrades to the stadium that was opened in 2001.

While relocation is not the go-to move, it appears that MLB commissioner Rob Manfred is pressuring Wisconsin state officials to provide funds by indicating the team could look to move as early as this fall.

American Family Field - formerly known as Miller Park - broke ground in 1996 before its grand Opening Day in 2001.

American Family Field - formerly known as Miller Park - broke ground in 1996 before its grand Opening Day in 2001.

Before then, the Brewers had been playing in Milwaukee County Stadium - a park that had been open for 50 years before closing in 2000.

I am from the Pittsburgh area and still live nearby in Eastern Ohio. I remember in 1997 the public turned down flatly a tax to fund two new stadia but the politricksters got their way by forcing it on us anyway. UI remember is was so cold that day, I voted earlier, it was my day off, and I took Mom down to vote later that evening. There were huge lines to vote and I asked if I could wait inside the polls to keep warm but since I was their earlier, I was denied so I had to sit in the car for over 2 hours, running the engine to keep the heat up every so often.

The current ballpark is beautiful and of retro modern design.

I can’t imagine it needing $450 mil of upgrades.

Paint it and put in new bathroom plumbing.

Sheesh. The bucs would be crazy to leave this park.

It makes no sense. Ok, I can kind of understand The Rangers, with the heat, and at least they are still using the old ballpark for other things instead of just tearing it down.

Nashville is probably the next target, that’s a very fast growing area.

I forgot about Nashville. They'll probably get a team in the next 5-10 years.

one of the teams will relocate. Orioles, Reds, Guardians, Pirates, Tigers, Royals, am I forgetting anyone else?

I just hope they’ll name the team “The Nashville Cats.”

Maybe the owner wants to move to Nashville.

Milwaukee is a city that's in decline.

The Braves were only in Milwaukee from 1953 to 1965. Then they moved to Atlanta in 1966, which was piling in teams as part of the civil rights revolution. The NFL Falcons were created the same year and they also stole the St. Louis Hawks basketball team.

The Seattle Pilots were created as an expansion team and moved to Milwaukee after one season in 1970. That’s the Brewers.

The best food I’ve ever had at a ballgame was in Chicago, then Milwaukee.

The Tigers will never relocate.

“This stuff has been going on since Tammany Hall.”

I guess we can analyze the classic Tammany Hall quote:

“I seen my opportunities and I took ‘em.”

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_W._Plunkitt

His view was that the businesses created the opportunity and he just took advantage of them.

That never happened. But could that idea be revived?

Only if they want to force the teams to build new stadiums. But the teams will just relocate before they go down this route.

More on Plunkitt—he argued that there were two kinds of graft—”honest graft” and “dishonest graft”.

The stadium pimpers are engaging in “dishonest graft” by his definition.

Bribery for taxpayer funding for a new stadium.

The teams nake gazillions in the ad revenue and agreements for televizing the games. They can well afford to borrow against future revenues and build their own standiums, but they’d just rather profit from taxpayers helping them.

And if the city refuses to play "ball", they'll just leave town and look for the next victim.

Of course the guy who created the whole cover story of “honest graft” says the businesses created the opportunity. But of course anybody with a brain in their head knows that just a self deluded rationalization. HE, and the rest of the machine, created the situation. Once they started accepting bribes, once they had their influence on the market, the standard was set. No business forced him to take a bribe, no business forced him to buy real estate he knew they needed to sell it to them for more, no business forced any member of the legislature to peddle their influence.

Once the “honest graft” machine was invented, that set the rules. Businesses are just following the rules.

The reason I am not fully convinced of your argument is my personal experience.

My family had a construction business that bribed politicians to get the work.

I could have joined it and continued the “tradition”.

I refused to do so.

Everybody has choices.
