Anything written by a self-described “educator” should be ignored.

“5. Allow tax dollars to used for school choice.”

If true school choice is passed, there will be no refuge. Right now, there are alternatives; private schools, charter schools, where a parent has to have some commitment to their child for them to go there. What if government says, “you can send your child to any school you want and we will pay”. All those kids that parents pay to keep their children away from will be going to their school. All schools will be at the lowest average. I believe school choice will have some serious and negative unintended consequences.

You think those tax dollars won't come with strings attached?

“You think those tax dollars won’t come with strings attached?”

That was the point of my comment. Maybe you meant to send this to the FReeper (where’s_the_Outrage?) who made the original comment.

Maybe what the author means by teachers having more training is more training in Martial Arts.

Good idea. Proficiency in the use of nunchucks would be good. Adds a level of visual deterrence not to mention flair when in use.

Advanced education is not training. Not by any measure.

Addl requirement: CCTV is every classroom. Such is on school web site able to be viewed by any parent. Any time students are in classroom with a teacher, the camera is on. If not, treat it like you would a copper who turned off his personal camera.
Don’t have to audit the video. Just so’s the pervs and bullies know that they are being watched in such a way that it would be a slam dunk to fire and/or imprison them.

LOL. Kind of like when nuns would rap kids on their palms with a ruler.

I've actually witness that live and in person as kid in a Catholic grade school run by,,,nuns. The robed principle stalked the halls with a wooden ruler ready and waiting. I exaggerate a bit, but not by much. ;O)

Get of of the DOE. Return control of schools to the local level.

Enough with the school board elections being at weird times. School board members should be elected at the same time as all the other public servants.

No teaching degrees. They are worthless. You need a degree in what ever field you are teaching. You teach history, have a history degree, you teach math, have a math degree.

National teacher's unions are verboten. Your elementary school wants to have a local union? Fine. They want to join with the union from the High School? No.

All school board meetings are open.

Permission to steal that?

A former teacher was running for school board here. He put that fact on his campaign signs. What a dope. He got whooped.

I do agree with the writer's third point: Pay teachers more.
Bullcrap. Trash collectors face more job accountability than teachers.

Teachers get paid no matter how poorly they teach. Attempts to hold teachers accountable to student performance only enriches consultants.

There are only two solutions, and I'd implement both:

1. Let kids set teacher pay.
2. Fire half the teachers and double the pay of those who survive.

How about testing the teachers, too?

In Florida the teachers are so ignorant of economics that the districts have found it necessary to provide an instruction sheet showing a breakdown of what comes out of their paycheck; apparently because so many truly think that their take home amount is what the state is paying them.
Not just Florida: when I taught high school in DC I was appalled how the teachers had no clue that the school paid at least 3-4 times their cost of health care, and hardly any of them knew what FICA taxes are, much less the employer contribution.

Teachers are entirely ignorant about life in general. They should all be forced to work a sales job as independent contractors for 3 years before being allowed anywhere near a classroom.

Bring back academic tracking. If you always teach to the average you'll bore the smart kids and frustrate those who are behind. In all liklihood without tracking the school will end up teaching to around the 30th percentile.
YES!

It's insanity to group students by age. (Just administrative convenience.)

“Father Take No Crap” sounds like a cool character.

He would probably spit in disgust at what is going on.
