A new study involving over 700,000 U.S. veterans reports that people who adopt eight healthy lifestyle habits by middle age can expect to live substantially longer than those with few or none of these habits. The eight habits are: being physically active, being free from opioid addiction, not smoking, managing stress, having a good diet, not regularly binge drinking, having good sleep hygiene, and having positive social relationships.
According to the results, men who have all eight habits at age 40 would be predicted to live an average of 24 years longer than men with none of these habits. For women, having all eight healthy lifestyle factors in middle age was associated with a predicted 21 additional years of life compared to women with none of these habits.
For the study, scientists used data from medical records and questionnaires collected between 2011-2019 from 719,147 people enrolled in the Veterans Affairs "Million Veteran Program," a large, nationally representative study of U.S. veterans. The analysis included data from adults age 40–99.
Overall, results showed that low physical activity, opioid use, and smoking had the biggest impact on lifespan; these factors were associated with around a 30–45% higher risk of death during the study period. Stress, binge drinking, poor diet, and poor sleep hygiene were each associated with around a 20% increase in the risk of death, and a lack of positive social relationships was associated with a 5% increased risk of death.
The estimated gain in life expectancy from adopting the eight healthy lifestyle factors grew slightly smaller with age but remained significant, meaning that adopting healthier habits at an older age can still help you live longer. "It is never too late to adopt a healthy lifestyle," said Nguyen.
As an observational study, the research does not definitively prove causality.

I was going to ask the same question. Never heard of sleep hygiene. Would that be like “clean sheets”?
That’s about twice as much as I walked last year. A week ago, my doctor gave me a big thumbs up, too.
What is sleep hygiene?
Pickleball is great exercise, but also produces many injuries to the older folks. Sports doctors love that so many are taking it up.
Sleep hygiene is kind of a catch all term to describe the healthy habits you should try to have to get the most from your sleeping hours.
They did not really define the necessity of a healthy heterosexual intimate life.
Its really not much of a study.

Will you really live longer or does it just seem longer?

You will definitely be healthier following these recommendations. So no matter how long you live you’ll live a better life.
“The eight habits are: being physically active, being free from opioid addiction, not smoking, managing stress, having a good diet, not regularly binge drinking, having good sleep hygiene, and having positive social relationships.”
Sounds like a life that everyone wishes they could lead! We have such an awful addiction problem among our Vets - which leads to a whole host of other problems, especially being homeless. :(
If anyone wants to help, call your local VA Hospital and see what openings they have for volunteering. If you’re a Vet yourself, contact AMVETS to help your fellow brothers and sisters in arms:

No....the exact opposite. Sheets that result in ‘avoiding the wet spot’ at least twice a day are the best for good health.
It’s all alcohol. Beer. Wine. Hard liquor. It’s all the same actual alcohol content. (Approximations, based upon potency: 12 oz glass of beer has 1 oz of alcohol; 8 oz glass of wine has 1 oz of alcohol; a shot of 80 proof whiskey has 1 oz of alcohol..)
And floss your teeth. Studies show that people who floss daily, actually live an average of 6.4 years longer than people who only floss the day before their dental appointment. Gum disease and heart disease are related

Q: Having good sleep hygiene? What the hell is that?
A: Strong sleep hygiene means
1) having a quiet bedroom environment
2) daily routines that promote consistent, uninterrupted sleep.
3) Keeping a stable sleep schedule
4) making your bedroom comfortable and free of disruptions 5) following a relaxing pre-bed routine
6) avoiding electronic devices in bed
7) building healthy habits during the day
These contribute to ideal sleep hygiene.
Hi.
You didn’t mention a good sex life.
Just trying to help.
