The race is on to try and save 46 pilot whales stranded on a West Australian beach after 51 died overnight.

An image showed the mammals huddling in the shape of a heart near the shore before the mass stranding on Cheynes Beach in southern Western Australia on Tuesday, making international headlines.

Authorities on Wednesday morning said volunteers would help to get the surviving whales back out to deeper water throughout the day.

The public has been asked to stay away from the popular tourist spot.

Probably the whales messaging human destroyers that they love the planet and want us to stop using petrol products. Back to nature. Live primitive. Screw progress. πŸ€”πŸ˜¬πŸ‘. Sound about right?

> Most likely due to the oceans being used as a giant cesspool. Most companies and nations use the ocean as a sewer, garbage and hazmat dump which is what is destroying the planet (faster than normal).

It's true that every nation dumps its cr@p into the ocean (there's only one -- it's all connected).

But the ocean is more vast and resilient than you or I can comprehend. For all of Earth's history, the ocean has accepted and dealt with all manner of biological excreta and chemical pollutants, dead animals and gigantic algae mats, not to mention toxins from underwater and land volcanoes, landslides, etc. All of it is bio-degraded, consumed, or eventually breaks up and sinks to the bottom. Those processes have been going on successfully for hundreds of millions of years -- if they didn't work, we wouldn't be here.

So yeah, humans dump a lot of cr@p into the ocean, and it contributes to the overall mess.

But "destroying the planet"? Hardly. Earth barely knows or cares that humans exist. We are a temporary biological blip, and our superficial surface damage will disappear shortly after we're gone. Even plutonium degrades eventually, and its half-life is negligible compared to the life-cycle of the Earth.

The most we can do is make ourselves uncomfortable in the meantime, and we are doing a good job of that. But truly, Earth does not care, and will easily erase our cr@p once we have passed into oblivion.

Yes the ocean has an amazing ability to clean and disinfect, in fact sea foam is a surfactant, but that is no reason to be stupid and push it to the point of becoming a sewer pit and losing its ability to recover and makes the world a miserable place with dead oceans (which is the trend) eventually the oceans power to cleanse WILL be overwealmed.

you can also pee in your pool and it will be fine as long as you keep cleaning it, but that does not make it wise.

and I believe that the fault of modern science is that it assumes that the activities of man are not a part of nature and it gets hijacked by politicians who use it for power

Granted. Don't misunderstand -- I'm basically an environmentalist, have been since the 60's. But my interest is long-term, where "long" means millions or tens of millions of years. I view our (human) tenancy as an interesting (certainly to us) temporary event.

The dinosaurs lasted what, 150 million years? We are next to nothing by comparison. Our contribution of garbage and pollution makes us uncomfortable while we're here, and perhaps it will even hasten our own demise as a species. But will it harm Earth? Nah, 'tis but a scratch.

I agree that it's regrettable, stupid, even immoral, the way politicians play with short-term interests for the sake of power. But while I value my life and the lives of my family and friends, and want us to be comfortable and properous, I don't conflate our activities and concerns with those of Earth itself.

Earth doesn't know or care about our stupidities. After we humans eventually pass, it will soon enough be as though we weren't here at all. That's why I don't buy into the view about how we're destroying Earth. We're not. We're just peeing in our own little pools.
