The race is on to try and save 46 pilot whales stranded on a West Australian beach after 51 died overnight.

An image showed the mammals huddling in the shape of a heart near the shore before the mass stranding on Cheynes Beach in southern Western Australia on Tuesday, making international headlines.

Authorities on Wednesday morning said volunteers would help to get the surviving whales back out to deeper water throughout the day.

The public has been asked to stay away from the popular tourist spot.

Pilot whales are largely an offshore species.

We have lots of land whales in Florida...................

Truly unfortunate but the implied anthropomorphic “heart shaped” grouping isn’t quite supported by the photo itself

“Wind turbines doing this?”

I’m no marine biologist, but it would seem wind turbines are known to create all kinds of low frequency harmonics and I can only image that might screw with the echo sounding whales use.

They were communicating, trying to tell us something...It's our fault, we did not listen, probably climate change, we must do something!

The biggest shock is that the article did not try to blame this on “climate change.”

Most likely due to the oceans being used as a giant cesspool. Most companies and nations use the ocean as a sewer, garbage and hazmat dump which is what is destroying the planet (faster than normal).

but being critical of polluting the ocean does not fly politically, because it is the power structure that is doing it, so the "Environmental movement" focuses on energy and air pollution....it's OUR fault for keeping our houses warm and driving our cars, while governments use the ocean as a dump but its no big deal

Time to change the name from pilot whales.

They beach themselves all the time.
