A New $2 Billion Theme Park is Opening in The U.S. — but It’s Not in Florida or California

A massive, $2 billion “Americana-themed” amusement park is opening in 2026 — and it's thousands of miles from the typical theme park hubs.

The American Heartland Theme Park and Resort will include an amusement park comparable in size to Disney World's Magic Kingdom in Florida or Disneyland in California — but it won’t be in either state.

Instead, the park and resort are planned to be built on a 1,000 acre property in the heart of northeast Oklahoma, just off Route 66.

The 125-acre theme park was designed by a team including more than 20 former Disney Parks builders and Walt Disney Imagineers

“Oklahoma is excited to welcome American Heartland Theme Park and Resort,” Oklahoma State Rep. Rusty Cornwell said in a press release. “Located on historic Route 66 just west of Grand Lake, the development will attract visitors from around the world to experience and celebrate the rich cultures and hometown values America has to offer.”

The plans for the park include classic amusement park rides, live shows, family attractions, waterways, and restaurants that will collectively create an “Americana-themed environment.”

The state of Oklahoma was selected as the location for the project because of its “business-friendly approach and innovative partnership efforts,” according to American Heartland CEO Larry Wilhite.

Tornado alley. Sounds good. Yes I know Disney world is home to hurricanes and Disneyland is earthquake central. But they were built decades ago. Good luck to this place. It probably will be well attended.

It has one advantage that I first considered when I heard about it. It's more centrally located in the country than either Florida or California, so it will require less travel to reach it for a large segment of people.

Originally Disneyland was only a little over 200 acres, and that included parking. Now it’s still only about 500 acres after all the expansion.

The article says that it will be expanded in stages.

Vinita, Oklahoma. Population: 5,743 Grand, Oklahoma. Population: Ghost Town Can anyone explain to me how a population of 10-15 thousand people (mostly retirees) can support a few million visitors per year?

Did a quick check. It's about 65 miles from Tulsa.

This park might work. Vinita is 160 miles from Branson, Missouri, a major tourist destination. It is on Interstate 44, the main corridor between Texas and the Midwest, and the main route used to go to Branson, near the junction with US 69, which, connecting with US 75, leads into the 8 million population of the DFW area. Tulsa, Oklahoma City, Kansas City, and St. Louis are a day or less drive to Vinita.

If they stick to the Americana theme, that would be a strong selling point in perhaps the most conservative region of the country. Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden did not carry a single county in the Sooner State.

The land is cheap and it is within driving distance of most of the U.S.

So, who cares about the occasional tornado?

Tulsa will be the closest major airport, with American Airlines the major airline serving it. It seems they are counting on a lot of visitors arriving by car or RV, and if they are smart they also bought a lot of surrounding land that they will lease to hotel/motel/shopping and restaurant developers.

Vinita, OK.

1 hour northeast of Tulsa.

2.5 hours west of Branson, MO.

This is also Cherokee tribal territory, which may have advantages for economic stimulus.

Plus the fastest growing part of Arkansas and home to Walmart and Tyson is just a few miles away. Large and growing airport there as well. It’ll work if done right.

Only a thousand or so failed theme parks so far.

What’s one more?
