Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said she's worried that President Joe Biden may derail a bipartisan push to address psychedelics due to his past rhetoric that questioned cannabis usage.
"I am concerned about the president," Ocasio-Cortez of New York told The Washington Post's Ben Terris.
Ocasio-Cortez said that her fears about Biden's approach to mind-altering drugs which have been gaining broader public acceptance are rooted in how he has talked about marijuana in the past.
"I believe the president has displayed a regressiveness for cannabis policy," she said. "And if there's a regressiveness toward cannabis policy, it's likely to be worse on anything else."
The New York Democrat is trying to remove federal limits on scientific research for psychedelics that have blocked further study of the drugs.
While the White House did not comment on the record to Terris, he recounted the president's mixed approach to cannabis policy. As recently as 2019, the then-presidential hopeful said marijuana could be "a gateway drug" generating some groans from a Las Vegas crowd.
"The truth of the matter is, there's not nearly been enough evidence that has been acquired as to whether or not it is a gateway drug," Biden said during a town hall event. "It's a debate, and I want a lot more before I legalize it nationally. I want to make sure we know a lot more about the science behind it."
As president, he's promised to pardon anyone in federal prison for simply possessing marijuana, though there are limitations to his pledge.

Just think of what is happening to our “carbon footprints” with miggies invading the U.S. from all over the planet by the millions. With the millions of freeloaders, we’re not going to be able to afford food or fuel here in the near future.
Joes doing his part, White House coke is of top quality
Well, I don’t doubt psychedelics could help some people, but just to keep things in perspective, remember that the government did “study psychedelics” before, and two of the subjects in those studies were Charles Manson and Ted Kazynski.
Yeah but the government prevented them from jumping when they most likely would have. We would have never known their names if they had just been allowed to jump.
A horse, is a horse, is a horse, of course, unless it’s AoC
She and Kamala drive me nuts with their mindless, nonsensical drivel. Space Cadets.
My opinion of Matt Gaetz would change and has changed. Nothing is so sure to corrupt someone as getting elected to office.
He seems to like cocaine. AOC should see if he’s up for that
Personally, I’m all for Liberals altering their minds with psychedelics since they don’t make much sense now. It may improve their views.
Whenever marijuana is discussed on Free Republic, there often will be people here favoring legalization of marijuana.
Often people will talk about the 10th Amendment , and other people will take the libertarian view that no drugs should be considered illegal. And still others say since alcohol is legal, other drugs or mind-altering substances should be legal as well.
Hear are four words which should convince any rational adult that overall, cannabis use is detrimental to society and a user’s mental abilities : Vice President Kamala Harris.
Ohhhhhhh, Wilburrrrrrr.
President Retard is ready to legalize cocaine
Well, they shouldn’t have taken his cocaine away ...
Maybe both sides of every controversy here show some bad things about everyone....

That about sounds right. It’s really sad. And the Left are enablers.
I have compassion for medicinal users like cancer patients but for recreational use? No thanks.
I never encountered cannabis in CA like I do in metro Atlanta. It's common enough that when someone asks, "do you smoke?," you know they're really asking if you smoke weed. I see parents in stores with their little kids and they reek of weed (described as "loud" here). It makes my blood boil.
It's hard to escape here and seems to be more common with a certain demographic. The Left want this to happen to keep people soft minded and malleable.
It’s an interesting process. I saw a guy who went through a psychedelic process and walked out a new person. He said he lost about 15 lbs. Slept better, doesn’t crave caffeine or alcohol. He is a straight shooter.

It puts you in control of yourself. Mind over matter. It gives you better mental resolve and thought organization to better control urges and addictions. You can do what you put your mind to doing.
