Shocking moment Ohio cop shoots dead three-year-old golden retriever called Dixie after she ran towards him during callout for five unleashed dogs running amok in the neighborhood

A golden retriever was shot dead by a police officer in Ohio and dramatic bodycam footage caught the controversial moment - as cries for the cop's firing from the bereaved family grow.

The July 2 shooting footage showed Lorain police officer Elliott Palmer shooting three-and-a-half-year-old Dixie and then leaving the dog dying on the sidewalk.

The dog ran up to the responding officer at a scene, and while it did not appear aggressive it was coming towards Palmer when he opened fire.

That sparked outrage from people who witnessed the killing of the dog and now family and social-media posters are calling for the officer's job.

'After she was shot one time in the street, he should have just let it go and let us get the dog and take her where she needed to be treated,' The dog's owner, Tammie Kerns, said to 3News, in tears.

'But he didn't do that. She was crawling — useless, helpless — in the street. He continued shooting her. She was trying to come to safety, and he just kept shooting her three more times after the first time,' she added.

The Lorain Police Department has launched an investigation into the incident, assuring transparency and a thorough examination of the circumstances.

It's unclear if Palmer remains on-duty during the investigation. Dailymail.com has reached out to the Lorain Police Department but officials did not respond in time for this report.

The Kerns family has threatened legal action against the police department, demanding justice for Dixie.

Such s person ought not be a cop...or armed. Maybe not allowed out of doors unsupervised.

If someone ambushed his ass one day, I’d be OK with that.

“””Shooting in a neighborhood?”””

I saw that also, the cop is throwing lead down the street at a harmless dog running away from him.

People who shoot carelessly bother me a lot, whether cops or clerks or recreational shooters.

They may not all be animals. But they are being trained poorly and indoctrinated to believe only they have the right to shoot anyone or anything. Citizens need to embark on an education campaign to teach cops that they arent the only armed defenders/protectors out there, and they need to learn how to work with the public, make safe decisions, avoid shooting innocent people and animals.

Certain irony in your post

A slur against whites like yours belies a certain uncouthness in your own nature

Sad

You should remove this post

I’ve actually had deputies come to my home outside Franklin tn and permit me to put my large uncut Rottweilers in their pen first

To their credit obviously

Elliott Palmer. Remember that name. Publish the address. Find this cretin to hell. No peace, ever.

We have a big golden retriever at the end of our street. It growls, it barks, and it will charge out of the owner’s yard at you - indeed, hoping to play. I know the dog, so I don’t mind and will play with it.

Recently, there were 5 year-old children visiting grandma’s house from out of state

The kids didn’t know the dog’s intent. Remember, you may think its “your baby” but dogs can’t talk.

One of the children ran into the street to escape the dog - nearly got hit by a car.

I’ll say it again: rednecks, control your animals.

Shot a golden retriever. SMH.

Who was the idiot that called the cops in the first place?

Why didn't they call animal control?

OMG, this is so horrible. The poor dog, the poor owners having to watch this horror. That cop should be treated to an acid dipped cat’o nine tails, fired, and sued for everything he has. He has the IQ of a vegetable and should not be in any position of authority, much less armed. This story really upsets me...

Most people when they are kids probably think the police department would be the one place where corruption and criminality, falsifying records, lying under oath, and doctoring evidence are impossible because 99 to 100% of the cops are good, instead, it is commonplace there, which indicates there isn’t anyone there to bust them, expose them, arrest them, investigate them, record them, turn them in, stop them, or even just talk them out of doing criminal acts.

Police Departments are the way they are because the police are the way they are.

A friend and I were walking our dogs off leash in a local park. Black lab and small pointer. A cop got out of his car in the parking lot and my friend’s dog took off to see him, my dog following, had to be two hundred yards.

I pulled my whistle and started blowing right as the cop put his hand on the gun. My dog slowed up, the other kept racing, and the cop stopped drawing and went in the building.

We leashed the dogs and spoke with him later. He had been genuinely frightened, thought they were feral, he was from a town with no big woods and fields. Little 35 lb pointer with a lab following.

I think the whistle got through to the cop in a way that our yelling would not have.

If I were the dog owner, I’d wear a t-shirt with his photo and my dog’s photo on it stating:

“This is the pv$$¥ cop who shot my sweet dog.
Fire this wimp”

I’d wear that shirt EVERYWHERE.
I’d mail the image to neighbors
I’d post it on social media with videos of how sweet my dog is.
I would be relentless.

He would get a nickname that even the thin blue line would quietly whisper amongst themselves behind his back.

Wow, several folks ready to KILL. Yeah, go for it. First, direct that anger towards people like Schumer, Pelosi, AOC, Rashida Tlaib, Adam Schiff, the cross-dresser who just shot and killed people and BLM rioters and others like them. I do not see that kind of anger on here for all of the wicked people in society who are ruining our country and our freedoms. When I do, I’ll join you in your dog cause. FIRST, I have to see you express that kind of anger towards those people mentioned. Wait, are you afraid?

Dogs need to be controlled by their owners, they cant just run amok. However, this thread isnt about that. Its about how a grown man (arguably a man) would take the life of a golden retriever, that even if it did attack could be fended off, out of fear for his life. Something wrong with that individual. People go to jail for animal cruelty, killing dogs cats, etc. But this cop just shoots and asks questions later. If he will do that to a dog, then he will also do that to an innocent person. I dont mean he will murder. I mean he will kill someone out of fear of his own life just because he gets spooked by someone else while doing his job. Its supposed to be a BIG deal to have to use your firearm as a cop. Thats fear of life, not fear of getting bitten by Fido.
