Well, to put it bluntly, this sucks. I was in our local Aldi store earlier today and they were in the midst of going to all digital pricing. That is, there's essentially a bar code on the shelf under each group of boxes of items, or under the 2% milk rack, etc., which you scan with a smart phone to get the price. No printed prices are on the shelves, and won't be, according to the employee I spoke with.
Safeway is far worse in the other direction. There are THOUSANDS of “Sale” stickers all over the store that are all changed weekly. There are basic prices, sale prices for everybody, “Member” prices, weekly special prices, Friday special prices, better prices if you buy four of something (even if you only want one), and on and one. Even worse, they want you to use their app to digitally “clip” product coupons and you don’t get that special price unless you enter your phone number in the terminal. Much much worse, I find that maybe 25% to 30% of the special prices do not ring up correctly. I grabbed a bottle of wine on sale (marked on the display case as $11) and it rang up at full price ($20). The clerk was rude and the store manager had to roam all over the store to find the display. Then they couldn’t get the right price to ring up on the register, so I had to go over to Customer Service to pay for it there with the $11 price.
Shopping at Safeway has become an absolute nightmare ever since they kept piling on more and more digital crap and very little of it actually works.
“I don’t have room on my phone for for their spyware.”
I have the room but just don’t want it!!!
:-)
True, but this was 1994. YT was still a few years out.
I have never seen a loose employee at Aldi other than the lone cashier.
Fry’s (Kroger) and Safeway both have “digital sale prices” . A regular package of Oreos was on the endcap at Safeway for $5.99 or $2.99 with the Safeway app. For all of Walmart’s evil, at least they are not doing that…yet.

AGREE!!!!
If I cannot clearly, easily and quickly see the price of something without scanning it with my smartphone and having to put my cheaters on, I'm not buying it.
Aldi's is my go-to store and where I make my grocery dollar stretch as much as possible. This though? It'll triple my time in the store and that's not a price I'm willing to pay.
I want to get what I need quickly and get out. Aldi's making "quickly" going away means a lost customer as far as I'm concerned.
It’s a pain when you can’t correlate price notices with the product on the shelf. You need a microscope to read the product description. Is the 2.90 the small or large? Are the prices above or below the product? Also irritating is Buy One Get One Free but there is only one left of each different item. Can you mix and match?

At most stores they just hit manager override at the register and manually enter the price.
Uh, I don’t like to be too specific, but this particular Aldi is in Western KY — I also shop @ Aldi stores in S. Illinois.
This just happened today - they were about 1/2 converted, I’d say.
Yesterday (I’m traveling about the area) I saw no digital up at all.
For example, a can of baked beans would be 39 cents.
Righto. I’ve no problem with that at all.
But the employee was very clear no printed prices would be up (and none were on the items now with the digital pricing.)
That seems like bizarre behavior for shoppers of a budget price (mostly) grocery who’s rep is, mostly, their low prices.
Get back to Walmart. A quality product for a fair price.
Precisely!
He dint say “Bye”.
They want to know who you are, what you are buying and not buying.
Krogers is the same way. Bazillions of little sale tags. Some poor worker has to meticulously change those things every week.
Not really, it's just one more notch up to 665.9 in the get ready to be given the mark of the beast/666 crap !!!
