World-renowned explorer Hamish Harding is among the five people who went missing aboard a tourist submarine visiting the shipwreck of the Titanic Monday morning, his family has confirmed.
Harding’s family said the 58-year-old British millionaire was aboard the missing OceanGate Expeditions submarine on Monday, a day after he shared his excitement about the trip on Instagram.
“We started steaming from St. Johns, Newfoundland, Canada yesterday and are planning to start dive operations around 4am tomorrow morning. Until then we have a lot of preparations and briefings to do,” Harding wrote alongside picture of himself signing a banner celebrating the expedition.
His stepson, Brian Szasz, reposted Harding’s message on Facebook Monday, writing: “Thoughts and prayers for my stepfather Hamish Harding as his Submarine has gone missing exploring Titanic. Search and rescue mission is underway.”
The Boston Coast Guard said an active search was underway for the missing OceanGate Expeditions submarine, which offers tourists a chance to visit the wreck 370 miles off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada, for $250,000.
The visit to the Titanic was poised to be only the latest in Harding’s impressive travel resume, with the explorer previously visiting space aboard the Blue Origin mission last year.

I’ll bet dying aboard a submarine is worse than dying on the Titanic itself.
—my guess is that, at any depth, it is near instant—
If a crack occurred in the hull, the pressure would kill you in a split second, the implosion would trigger a compression explosion like in a diesel engine and it would be over in a second....................
I’d rather be lost in space, rather than lost in the oceans deep.
If it crushes, death would be instant.
If the sub had a pressure hull fail they’d never know what hit them.
it would be over in a second....................
That’s if you were lucky.
72 hours of air left as of today 1pm...? but if there was a
catastrophe..
Davy Jones’ Locker. The sea is fearsome and unforgiving.
"If there is an implosion at depth, the compression heating caused by the ocean rushing into the hull would be sufficient to heat the air inside to hundreds or even thousands of degrees. Under such circumstances, any flammable object inside (grease, clothing, people) would likely ignite or detonate ('Diesel effect')."
Hmm... The name of the company is OceanGate... That was the first clue... Ever hear of a movie called Heaven’s Gate? That movie sunk faster than the Titanic.
Is there someone on board that ticked off a Clinton or a Biden? Any prominent conservatives on board?
“If the sub had a pressure hull fail they’d never know what hit them.”
But if they are on the ocean floor next to their launch platform waiting for their 96 hours of air to run out - not good.
When the USS Scorpion disintegrated at crush depth, the propeller ended up in the bow, and it happened in a fraction of a second.
So did the Cult........................

A combination of ground-breaking engineering and off-the-shelf technology gives Titan a unique advantage over other deep diving subs; the proprietary Real Time Hull Health Monitoring (RTM) systems provides an unparalleled safety feature that assesses the integrity of the hull throughout every dive. The use of off-the-shelf components helped to streamline the construction, and makes it simple to operate and replace parts in the field.
Off-the-shelf components... If you're building a car, this may be innovative. If you're building a sub... This sounds crazy.
I’d have thought that the air would be dissolved into the water pretty quickly. But, certainly a pile-driver blow to anything inside.
