My 12 year old went out to the range and shot my AR-15 and 9mm, which we then lost while we were canoeing.
She really enjoyed it.

My dad taught me all sorts of “life skills” that I had no interest in learning and some that were a bit disgusting to me (like how to replace a toilet, first scraping up all the encrusted remnants of the old wax sealant ring... that was fun). Nobody every said he was the “a hole” or sympathized with my plight.
Suck it up. Life only gets harder when you’re on your own and have to do every dirty job yourself.

the differences between fathers and mothers...
teach them to survive when you are gone... not to rely on you while you are here...
catch the fish, gut the fish, start a fire, cook the fish...
survive.

My daughters helped butcher deer as soon as they were capable. Nothing strange after seeing deer hanging in the garage for years before that. Butchering was a family chore, as well as grinding meat, making sausages and jerky. My eldest daughter’s favorite meal was a venison rump roast that I would make on Christmas Eve. Each year she would ask, “are we having deer butt for Christmas Eve dinner?”

Why would any rational parent force a child to gut a fish if that clearly upset or grossed out the child?
Wait a year. Wait two years. Let them grow into it.
Unless the parent believes that civil society is going to collapse tomorrow, what difference does it make?
None!

Agreed. Starting at about that age, I helped with cleaning the fish from family outings. It’s a good age to learn such skills.

She did learn a life skill - how to be the next Bryan Kohberger. 35-to-life, probably.

She was thirteen. I was scaling and gutting fish.... not sure my exact age but considering where I did it I could not have been over seven. I never enjoyed it but I know how to do it. At thirteen you should be gutting game.
And no dad, you are not a jerk. You wife needs to get off the fainting couch and cook some fish.

I saw someone gut a fish when I was about that age, and I’ve never eaten seafood since.
(But I’m sure I would feel likewise if I ever went to a slaughterhouse.)

A buddy & I were going fishing early one morning when his girlfriend insisted she come along. Everyone was in their early 30s. We got the boat to our area & she wanted to drop a line. We told her she had to bait her own hook. We had minnows.
She started to reach into the bucket & he says, "I wouldn't do it that way if I was you."
I said, "Ya, those things can take the tip of your finger off."
"What do I do?" she asks.
"Use the needle nose pliers to grab one" I say.
She proceeds to attempt that & I and my friend smirk at each other.
Less than a minute later she shrieks, "I caught one!!!!"
We look & sure enough there she is, sitting in the middle of the boat, minnow bucket at her feet, with a minnow squirming at the end of a needle nose pliers.
Oh, she was blond & this is a true story.
I guess she "learned" us....;O)

I used to go fishing in the Pacific Ocean. When we brought home fish to gut, we made the cat happy. She feasted on the fish guts.

Not at all. Your food does not originate in the grocery store. It comes from somewhere. Its best if you learn where and learn life skills like how to gut a fish. You might need to sometime....or maybe you might just want to get away from eating ultra processed everything.
